Good question. I just read a review of the new Navy Seal account which pointed out that the first shot did not kill UBL: he was still lying on the floor writhing in pain. Several shots later he was dead. It’s obvious the Seals would have carried out whatever instructions they were given, i.e., capture alive if feasible, else kill. It’s clear from the Seal’s account that it was feasible to capture him alive.
So apart from blowing the intelligence we did get, we evidently missed a golden opportunity to gather substantially more through interrogations etc. (since such interrogations ultimately shook a lot of key intelligence out of KSM, for example).

Why was Osama buried at sea instead of being photographed and autopsied? In a high profile killing like this, showing the body is crucial for proof that he’s dead.
