Condescending debate outburst exposes weak defense strategy
Note to President Obama: Stop pretending youre a military genius. Commander in chief is simply a title, not a skill set.
In Monday nights foreign policy debate, Mr. Obama mocked Republican challenger Mitt Romney for daring to discuss the dangerous diminution of American naval assets to levels of a century ago. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our militarys changed, said Mr. Obama. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines. And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where were counting ships. Rarely has a president come across as more petulant on such a serious topic.
Mr. Obama meant to belittle Mr. Romney by comparing his ship metric to a childrens game, but Mr. Romney was speaking with a shorthand familiar to all military specialists except, apparently, Mr. Obama. Until this year, Navy planners spoke of building up to a 313-ship fleet. The Navys 30-year shipbuilding plan attached to the 2012 budget request projected the addition of 57 new ships by 2017. Last January, the Defense Department scaled this back to 41 vessels with planners abandoning all hope of reaching 313. This was the background to Mr. Romneys comment, and it demonstrates he knows more about how the military works than Mr. Obama.

And the Admirals/planners in place now are Obama people.
Great line from a very good editorial.
Obama's such a foolish little Marxist punk.
I haven’t seen the “We didn’t want to violate Libyan airspace” excuse today.
Exactly, and when Romney takes over he'd better clean house.
I'm sure a lot of Navy people were thrilled to find out that their Commander-in-Chief doesn't know that in the U. S. Navy, submarines are called boats, not ships. Ships are targets.
I was hoping Mitt would ask him if he knew how many corps men were enlisted in his Navy. (or some variation of)
For a reference point, I believe Reagan wanted a 600 ship navy. So we are now talking about a navy with about half the ships and of relatively the same level of technology (we had ships that airplanes could land on back in the ‘80s too).
That was only 30 years ago. Or to use the standard of military destruction - 2 Dem presidents ago.

BAYONET TRAINING (See Sidebar)
Charge with lethal precision
A bayonet is a removable fighting knife that attaches to the muzzle of a rifle barrel. In close combat situations where a rifle cannot be fired, the bayonet is an indispensible, lethal weapon. Learning how to effectively use a bayonet is an important part of Marine Corps training.
On the bayonet assault course, recruits learn to attach and detach the bayonet from the rifle quickly and to engage targets aggressively. They become masters of offensive and defensive fighting techniques.

President Romney should have asked comrade obama if the demise of the horse had anything to do with America “designing the automobile” or “building the intercontinental railroad.”

Applies in many other areas as well. EPA comes to mind immediately towards the top of the list.
