European Union antitrust regulators accused Microsoft on Wednesday (24 October) of breaching a 2009 order to offer a choice of web browsers to consumers on its Windows 7 operating system, the first step in a procedure that could lead to a hefty fine.
But the European Commission, which acts as antitrust watchdog in the EU, said in July this year that Microsoft had not complied with the order for over a yearbetween January 2011 and then.
The EUs top antitrust official reminded that companies had to live up to their commitments as the fastest way to solve antitrust concerns or face the consequences.

Do they force other companies to offer competitors’ products?
Browsers are FREE. You can download a new browser in one minute.
How much are the peasants in EUSSR paying these busybody nannies anyways?
Supposedly on average, they get 24K ($31K) per year, but they get piles of other compensation and bonuses on top of that.
Slow and stupid EU scum. It is amusing to watch. They have no clue. And while Microsoft isn’t a good long term play, they could turn off Europe. EU idiots.
In other news, General Motors was fined for bundling General Motors brand seats in their vehicles and not offering a choice to consumers...
Talk about kicking someone when they are down. The EU should cook up some extortion case against Apple and fine them.....They need a billion or two to pay the bloated salaries of the EU parasites
Netscape used to be such hi-tech happening software that you could buy the better version is the store. In a package. Circa 1997 I saw my friend do this. They also had a free version out. Microsoft Internet Explorer was always free and integrated into the O/S
This is just a stupid ploy by the EU to extort more money from Microsoft. There are many freely available browsers a user can download. So, there really isn’t any reason for them to do this other than trying to get a payoff.
Absolutely! How much of a klutz to not be able to hit “Duhhh down load now” and get firefox up and running in at least 2 minutes of your precious time.
Bah. It will all be over in a couple months anyway...the euroweenies will be bankrupted and forgotten.
Gee - I have Win 7 and IE 9, haven’t told the OS to do anything special, yet also have a test bed of Chrome installed and all I have to do is check a box and Chrome would become my default browser - what is the EU saying - are they so stupid they can’t download/install a competitor’s browser?
The EU consistently makes bad choices. This is no different.
The accusations they are making are simply NOT true. This is nothing more than simple extortion.
You can download Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc. any time you wish.
Yes. It is that simple. I never use Internet Exploder except when I reset a vmware image and have to use to download Firefox again. LoL.
