Dems Begin the Post-Obama Blame Game (it's Bill Clinton's fault if Zero loses)
Commentary ^ | October 24, 2012 | Jonathan S. Tobin

Some Democrats are apparently not waiting for Barack Obama to lose the presidential election before starting the inevitable recriminations about whose fault it was. Whether writing strictly on his own hook or as a result of conversations with campaign officials, New York Times political writer Matt Bai has fired the first shot in what may turn out to be a very nasty battle over who deserves the lion’s share of the blame for what may turn out to be a November disaster for the Democrats. That the Times would publish a piece on October 24 that takes as its starting point the very real possibility that the president will lose, and that blame for that loss needs to be allocated, is astonishing enough. But that their nominee for scapegoat is the man who is almost certainly the most popular living Democrat is the sort of thing that is not only shocking, but might be regarded as a foretaste of the coming battle to control the party in 2016.

Bai’s choice for the person who steered the president wrong this year is none other than former President Bill Clinton, who has widely been credited for having helped produce a post-convention boost for the Democrats. Clinton’s speech on behalf of Obama was viewed, with good reason, as being far more effective than anything the president or anyone else said on his behalf this year. But Bai points to Clinton as the primary advocate within high Democratic circles for changing the party’s strategy from one of bashing Mitt Romney as an inauthentic flip-flopper to one that centered on trying to assert that he was a conservative monster.

The saddest thing is, if Obama was white, Romney lead would be +20%. America still has this guilt thing going on.

I can live with this idea. Just so they lose.

Wonder if someone can restage a tombstone-OK corral-type event on the streets of Chicago with the Clintanoids vs. the Obamnations.

There is so much violence in Rham’s Chicago we might not even be able to tell it happened until the lie-omagraph registers a major dip.

First, they should wait 'til Romney wins before they fix blame.

Second, they should stick to the time tested and honored explanation that Obama, in the end, proved far to smart too be President...make that...remain President.

Somehow, he was able to overcome his own intelligence to get elected the first time. Nevertheless, his inner Einstein was simply too powerful to pull it off for a reelection.

Then they can issue the corollary i.e. Romney has the density required for the job and may be stupid enough to stay there eight years.

“America still has this guilt thing going on.”

I don’t believe that for a minute; “white guilt” died as those foolish enough to vote for Obama’s “half-blackness” have spent four years watching race relations deteriorate further. I’m seeing few Obama stickers in an area that was plastered with them in 2008.

America DOES have a nanny-state addiction, which has been exacerbated by this horrible economy; they want the “freebies” with no thought that in fact they aren’t free. Obama is trying to buy the election with food stamps; God help us if the strategy works.

This is interesting. I live in Obama country in Minneapolis. There are very few Obama signs these days or signs of any persuasion, for that matter, to be seen in the extended neighborhood.

This isn't so when I drive through suburbia i.e. the signs of all kinds are as prolific as ever.

One of the secondary benefits of a Democrat loss in November will be the inevitable circular firing squads.

First, Romney has to win the election. We cannot stop thinking about the checkered flag while there are still a few laps to go!

Go Romney/Ryan 2012!

Here in northern NJ we’ve been kicked in the teeth by this economy; I wasn’t surprised that Governor Christie won election here one year after Obama carried the state (Christie is a fiscal conservative who put property tax caps in place to curtail our skyrocketing taxes - thousands of police, fire and teachers were laid off as a result, and the tax situation has stabilized a bit). We’ve lost a lot of decent jobs (especially financial-sector), and there is an exodus of companies (and their employees) to greener pastures; lots of foreclosures as people with “new normal” salaries deal with high costs of living, and these are keeping housing prices down. Our infrastructure is falling apart, and there is no money to fix anything. Because of these factors, I don’t think it is inconceivable for Romney to carry NJ; even our welfare reservations and illegal aliens are hurting.

I go to the Meadowlands flea market (near Giants Stadium and a large mall that was finished a few years ago but never opened), and you can see people selling their possessions desperate to raise cash; before it was unwanted “stuff”, now it is their appliances, silverware, etc.. This economy has taken a frightening toll in the NYC metro area, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel; most of the jobs that left are never coming back (they’ve gone to Manila, Mumbai, etc.). Governor Christie canceled the construction of a third tunnel between northern NJ and NYC, and all the proponents could say was that people might need it if they wanted to see a Broadway show in NYC - it wasn’t even about commuting to work anymore.

It's funny how the "blame" for what may or may not be an Obama loss includes a discussion about Bill Clinton's role. I saw his appearance at the Democratic National Convention as a sign of serious trouble in that party. I'm not referring to the content of his speech, either (I wouldn't even know what he said anyway).

If you go back and look at the list of top speakers at the convention, one thing that stands out is that none of those top speakers was someone who has a future in elected office. In other words, the Democrats had to fill their prime-time speaking slots with people like former president Bill Clinton, former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, former presidential candidate and life-long loser John Kerry, etc. Very few Democrats who have ongoing or future political careers were given prominent speaking slots.

My immediate reaction was that anyone in the Democrat Party who thinks he/she has a future in politics would have no interest in being affiliated with a loser. So many Democrats who are engaged in tight races steered clear of the convention -- for good reason. I believe the entire West Virginia delegation was absent, for example. I suspect these people all know damn well that this Obama guy is being perceived by more and more Americans as nothing more than a race-baiting malcontent, and America's first "affirmative action president."

Who in their right mind wants to be affiliated with President Dinkins?

Mitt Romney will win.

Every one pretends Obama still has a chance but as the days dwindle, you'll see Romney start pulling away.

Being the front-runner has its own logic and events are moving in that direction.

The so-called "October Surprise" is a dud. The only thing people care about is the economy, stupid. Its not going to recover by Election Day and O is not going to get credit for the last four years of misery and failure.

What in the world must be Matt Bai's New York Times' colleague Nate Silver be thinking? They're already blaming each other for the impending defeat.

Democrats are not known for losing graciously!

Obama’s October surprise was the Libya cover-up bomb that blew up in his lap.

Free Money! < /SPIT>

My little town in New Jersey got two rookie police officers from President Clinton's "100,000 Cops on the Street" program.

The feds picked up the salary for the first year, then half of the next year, then a quarter the following. So they would up shelling out about $100,000. But since then, my property taxes have gone to paying an additional $2,000,000 dollars to keep the donut shops safe.

Free Money!

And now Obama wants to pull the same damn trick with his "100,000 Math and Science Teachers in the Classroom" program. And no doubt my town government will be eagerly grabbing for their ankles to get more of that sweet "Free Money"!
