A Friendly Reminder About Voter I.D.
Red States ^ | 10/25/2012 | Sean Davis

Posted on 10/26/2012 4:17:22 AM PDT by IbJensen

The Left would have you believe that voter I.D. is discriminatory. Racist. Oppressive. Why? Because, according to the Left, many minorities and low-income individuals simply lack the time or ability to obtain the I.D. they would need to vote. They can’t find transportation to the DMV. The government I.D. offices are only open during working hours, when hourly wage workers are occupied with their own jobs. In short, for many individuals, getting an I.D. is just impossible.

So here’s your friendly reminder about proof of identification laws in the U.S.: in order to work legally in this country, you have to prove your identity using documents like a passport, driver’s license, Social Security, or birth certificate. The I-9 form, which employers are required by the federal government to collect in order to verify an individual’s eligibility to work in the U.S., requires the production of the very same I.D. that the Left says is impossible to obtain.

“All U.S. employers must complete and retain a Form I-9 for each individual they hire for employment in the United States,” the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency writes on its website. “[T]he employer must examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s) an employee presents to determine whether the document(s) reasonably appear to be genuine and relate to the individual and record the document information on the Form I-9.”

That’s right. If you want to work legally in the U.S., the federal government will not accept a water bill as proof of your identity or residence. It will not accept a bank statement. Heck, it won’t even accept your driver’s license as a sole means of identification. If you only have your driver’s license, then you must also produce a Social Security card or birth certificate.

This begs the question of how the hypothetical low-income individuals in the liberals’ examples were ever actually hired for a job that they now can’t possible get away from in order to obtain a valid I.D.

So the next time a liberal tells you that requiring I.D is racist, or that requiring it is oppressive, or that the women in this story in the New York Times couldn’t possibly find the time to obtain a valid I.D., just ask them the following: if it’s oppressive to require proof of identity to vote, then why is it not oppressive to prove your identity to get a job?

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with an operator at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where Michelle Obama worked as a vice president prior to her husband’s election in 2008. I asked the operator if the hospital requires proof of identity prior to receiving treatment. He said the hospital did require proof of identification, such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, or Social Security card (none of which is required to vote in many states). But what about emergency ER treatment? Would I have to provide I.D. to receive emergency care? Yes, he replied.

New question: if health care is a right, but requiring an individual to provide I.D. prior to voting is racist or oppressive, then how is requiring an I.D. prior to receiving health care not oppressive? Inquiring minds want to know.

the real question is should someone so unplugged from society be casting a ballot? Without a photo ID, not only can you not legally work, you can't drive, purchase cigarettes or alcohol, view a rated R movie, or cash a check. In fact, just getting stopped by the police becomes a big issue if you don't have photo ID. Sounds like the perfect democrat voter...

I'm sick and tired of people yelling about their rights when they are not willing to take any responsibility to be a good citizen!

Of course this whole issue is just a ruse. No one that is truly interested in voting is going to be stopped by a voter ID law. They will take the responsibility to make sure they can vote. The only ones stopped by voter ID laws are the illegal voters.

No more poll taxes; just photo IDs and IQ tests.

“They can’t find transportation to the DMV.”

Really!??

Hmmm...But they have no trouble getting their a#@es hauled to the voting booth, though, do they?

What kind of ID do they need to get, food stamps? They seem to have NO problem with handouts.

Does the author believe these ID-challenged voters have held or pursued legitimate, on-the-books, JOBS? Many of these folks function in shadow worlds, sometimes with multiple identities and forged documents. They see legal documents as a means to reduce cheating, identity and benefits fraud, tax evasion, and such, therefore threatening and racist.

“But what about emergency ER treatment? Would I have to provide I.D. to receive emergency care? Yes, he replied.”

I knew this reeked of B.S., so I called a physician friend who works there and he assured me that when an unconscious patient comes in, they do not rifle through his pockets looking for Id., they treat him and get the Id when he’s able to provide it.

If someone at the hospital told the author that Id has to be provided before treatment, he’s either lying or ignorant of the law and hospital policy.

It’s all a big ruse. The “disadvantaged” must have ID’s, or they couldn’t get their government bennies. The “working class” must have ID’s, or they couldn’t work. Even the elderly must have ID’s, or they couldn’t cash their Social Security checks. The only ones who don’t have ID’s are illegal immigrants, dead voters, and fake voters. In other words, the Democrat base.

There haven't been Social Security "checks" in years. Social Security funds are direct deposited into your bank account.

But here's the interesting thing about this: guess what you need to open a bank account? That's right, a picture ID.

Go figure.

I think they still do checks for people that don’t have bank accounts, don’t they? If so, either way you need a photo ID.

Even to go to court to file a lawsuit against the “racist voter suppression law” requiring you to have a photo ID would require you to have a photo ID, or they wouldn’t let you in the courthouse!

Heck, let’s go one step further. Draft up a law that allows them to cast a provisional ballot without photo ID, put them on a list of people that need assistance getting to the DMV, and have them pick a time in the next 2 weeks to get picked up and driven there. Don’t count their ballot until they make the appointment and obtain ID.

That would be no less constitutional than the current system of letting voters who are not registered cast a provisional ballot, and only counting it if their registration information is confirmed after the election.

My apologies. My previous blanket statement about paper checks was wrong.

But the gvt is pushing hard to get away from paper checks.

I was a payroll supervisor for over 750 persons in 1976-7.

We were very careful to get proper I-9 data from our locations in 7 states.

I was having so much trouble in getting managers to comply that I finally told them I wanted a copy of every single piece of ID they presented to get the job attached to the I-9 and that no paychecks would be forthcoming until I was satisfied. One kid was 18 & had claimed 9 deductions. I said I wanted copies of birth certificates for those 9 dependents. Turned out he had family in Mexico & he was using them as dependents. NOT LEGAL!!

We made it clear that I would be reviewing each & every employee’s records to clear up the errors. We suddenly had a new hiring explosion....as many people suddenly got ‘new ID’.

It apparently stopped some of the fraud at the outlying locations, but we still got Non-Match letters from the Social Security Administration on a regular basis.

I finally went to my supervisor & showed him the amount of letters I had been trying to clear up —there were over 40— and some were applicable to the prior payroll supervisor, but many were still happening under my watch, despite my efforts in getting copies of all documents presented.

He finally got the picture. Even with copies of “ID”, we had many non-matches.

He took stronger measures with the managers & they were pissed at me for getting them in trouble.

They couldn’t get the picture that the company was the one that was getting into trouble.

I believe the majority of that change in mailing Soc Sec checks was pushed thru in May of 2012. There will be absolutely no further mailing of checks in the first months of 2013.

I moved from one state to another in March of 2005.

Under the Patriot Act I had to provide the following to open a new bank account & to get my driver’s license.

A photo ID—prior Driver’s license was OK.
My Social Security card- original- no copy.
My embossed certified Birth Certificate—no copy.
3 other pieces of ID:
I used 2 credit cards & my membership card in the Arabian Horse Registry as a breeder/owner.

ONE piece of ID would not get me either a new bank account or a new driver’s license.
