Portman: 'If We Don't Win Ohio, It's Tough To See Us Winning The Election Nationally'

Portman: 'If We Don't Win Ohio, It's Tough To See Us Winning The Election Nationally' By NBC's Andrew Rafferty

FAIRVIEW PARK, OH -- Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, the chairman of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign in the Buckeye State, said Friday that it would be tough for Romney to win the election without carrying Ohio.

"I'm feeling the pressure not just because I'm chairing the effort here in Ohio, but mostly because I feel the pressure for our country and what's going to happen over the next four years," Portman told NBC News on Friday while traveling between campaign stops for Romney. "If we don't win Ohio, it's tough to see us winning the election nationally. It's possible, but it's very difficult."

Paul Beck, Ohio State University professor, describes the importance of winning Ohio, a battleground with a large number of electoral votes. It's a diverse state with liberals and conservatives matching a cross section of the nation.

Most of the recent attention the Ohio senator has received has centered on the key role he played in Romney's debate preparation and how close he came to being chosen as the GOP vice presidential nominee. But before he took on any of those roles, he was tapped by Romney to lead the former Massachusetts governor's effort in the key battleground state.

"We're doing better in Cleveland, and Cincinnati and Columbus and Toledo where we have some of the numbers of the absentee and early voting, we're doing better than we expected we would," he told volunteers gathered at the Avon Lake Victory Center. "We're exceeding our targets."

I would add - anyone complaining about Rob Portman or obsessing over Ohio polls is more than welcome to join me in calling fellow Ohio voters and encouraging them to vote for Romney. If you're worried, turn it into action.

Are you on our side? Because you seem to cling to every story re: Ohio, while ignoring the national trend.

Let me say it again, there is NO WAY, NO HOW that Romney wins the national vote by 4-5 points and loses the election. Itis statistically impossible.

Furthermore, Ohio always keeps pace with the national vote, and leans R - even in 2008.

So you keep on hanging on to Ohio. Just like the media. (It’s their new little squirrel.)

We will win Ohio, and we will win Wisconsin, and New Hampshire, and Colorado.

Romney will win 52-47 with 300+ EVs.

Maybe I over-reacted with Portman, but he shouldn’t be whining with “I’m feeling the pressure” if he’s in the position that he’s in. I mean, can you imagine Patton saying that to the press on his drive to Bastogne???

Actually better. PA has 2 more electoral votes than Ohio. Also, if PA goes for Romney, the election’s over.

If I may....I remember steelfish....as suspect.

Good call. I see it the same way. Ironic Obama 47%, but this looks like where he is regardless of where Romney settles.

Ohio men, Woody demands that you vote for Romney. Woody doesn’t like Obama.

“I am sick and tired of OHIO’s ‘self-importance’ in this election, “

I’m sick and tired of steelfish. He isn’t on our side. Furthermore, portman may be saying that to get zeros campaign to waste time and money in ohio

Ohio's demographics are much more favorable for Romney than Pennsylvania's; if he is strong enough in Pennsylvania to win, he will have already won Ohio.

I am confident he will win Ohio, and I believe he will come close but lose Pennsylvania. I do think the GOP Senate canidate in PA, Smith, will beat that idiot Casey, though.

Romney will win Ohio comfortably. But it doesn’t matter. Anyone with a pulse can see that the Obama team is in a state of panic, as they watch the fire burn on both sides of their firewall. Things can change, of course, but at this point, Romney is looking at a 4-6 point win nationally, with the potential for a landslide.

Independents are breaking hard for Romney, Republican turnout will hit records, and Democrats aren’t even bothering to put signs on their lawn.

Ohio is irrelevant at this point.

This was on NBC. Did they run a video of Portman saying this or was it just “reported?”

I trust nothing from the networks.

You've got that right.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

-Proverbs 18:21-

We can either get in agreement with God, or we can get in agreement with the enemy. If Portman can't get in agreement with God, then he needs to keep his mouth shut and stop charging the air with negativity.

I’ll say it again...

Ohio is NOT a must-win state!

Colorado, Wisconsin, and either Iowa, Nevada, or New Hampshire will win it. It is very conceivable that Romney can win these states while losing Ohio.

I want Ohio, but it is not the firewall everyone thinks it is. There are several plausible scenarios to victory:

NV, CO, IA, ME-2
WI, CO, NV
WI, CO, NH
WI, CO, IA
NV, CO, IA = 269 and House selection

I think Romney has a comfortable lead right now in Ohio, and this is an attempt to bluff Obama into putting EVERYTHING Obama has, into Ohio.

This is why Obama calls Mitt a “bull$hitter”....

Clever batsard, lol....

Wouldn’t a win in Pennsylvania be just as good as one in Ohio?

To me, it would be even better.

I can see a scenario where Romney wins without Ohio - by winning Wisconsin, NH, CO, FL, NC, VA, but losing OH, NV, and Iowa.

This gets him to 271.
