CODY Harris is legally blind, but when he was woken by the smoke detector at 5.30am, he set about rescuing his family from the burning Townsville home.
Cody, 10, is the winner of the Child of Courage medal in this year's Pride of Australia awards.
He has lost most of his sight to albinism but he managed to alert his two sisters before looking for his younger brother David, 4, who was in a bedroom.
Opening the door to a smoke-filled room, Cody found David curled in a corner and charged in to pull him to safety.
He had earlier ordered his sisters to wake their mother, who is hearing-impaired.

He didn’t save the, the Government did!
Having been in a fire myself and having worked in a large hospital’s ER for many years (I think they’re called A&E Departments Down Under) I have a special “appreciation” for fires. The courage and quick wits that this kid showed is nothing short of amazing.
Being blind is actually an advantage in situtations like this - in the smoke nobody can see, so the one who is used to not seeing can function better.
Great story!
Here's Cody Harris with his grandparents, being thanked by his sister whose life he saved. Outstanding. Thank God for this kid!
great story!
it’s always a pleasure to read about people that “adapt and overcome”! (Clint Eastwood, Heartbreak Ridge).
a ten-year old with more courage than our *resident and the entire executive branch.
blessings, bobo
Love how his little albino sister is named “Ebony.” Mom and Dad have a sense of humor!
Its always nice to hear of great deeds. What a special little boy.
I’m posting to you, Gamecock, because the post of the poster of the article, naturalman, was removed. I’m just curious as to why. It’s hard to imagine what he possibly wrote that brought that about.
Did anyone see it before it was removed and if so, could the subject matter be divulged? I’ve never seen anything that naturalman has ever written that was controversial.
That is strange.Naturalman is a long time member and a very polite, articulate and knowledgeable one at that. One need only look at his profile page to understand that.Perhaps he wrote something that's totally acceptable Down Under but "suspect" here...you know, the old "two nations divided by a common language" thing.
It was a photo - the same photo that has since been reposted, so I’m not sure what the problem was. Maybe there was some sort of copyright problem.
Thanks.
I had a hard time believing that you would write anything that would cause the administrator to delete it. OTOH, I can readily understand a problem about copyrights.
