Coming hot on the heels of speculation that some Jeep production may be moved to China comes a bombshell from a Bloomberg report. Fiat is now considering moving Chrysler and Jeep production to Italy.

According to the piece, "To counter the severe slump in European sales, (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, for export to North America. The Italian government is evaluating tax rebates on export goods to help Fiat. Marchionne may announce details of his plan as soon as Oct. 30, the people said."

Just what we need. Bio-degradable Chryslers, like the Fiat will be swept off the garage floor in 8-10 years.

When I was living in Italy last year, I saw Voyager minivans and 300C sedans under the Lancia marque. This saddens but doesn’t surprise me, especially since the Italians are scraping for jobs and the Italian government is scraping for tax revenue.

If NO Jeep models are manufactured in Italy and imported into the USA now, pray tell us how that it will not affect US production when\if it occurs in the future...

Sounds like funny math to me.

They don’t fear Obama like they used to. Only the Republicans in the House & Senate still fear him.

You have more faith in crony capitalists that I do :) If blackmail didn't work O would switch to graft.

So the way to boost European sales is to produce cars in Europe and export them to the US, where all the laid off Chrysler and Jeep workers will just eat them up. Great plan. Is it possible that as the EU implodes, people will simply be buying less cars there? Is it also possible that one shouldn’t open new factories in imploding economies, especially not after cashing big bailout checks?

Because these are Jeep models that do not exist. These are tiny Jeeps primarily for the European market, but will be sold here as well.

I'm pretty sure that the Patriot/Compass replacement will be built in Torino, in addition to the Fiat subcompact SUV (with Jeep badging). From various articles I've seen, the former are intended for export to North America while the tiny one stays in Europe.

There may not be a net loss for Jeep production here in the U.S., though - the Grand Cherokee is going to serve as the platform for Fiat's new upmarket SUVs badged as Alfas and Maseratis.

Soon you will be driving a beautiful yet CRAPPY Italian Jeep. Italian cars are beautiful to look at, but they are crappy driving wise -- yes even Ferrari!!

Thank you Obama for giving our treasure Jeep to FIAT (the 'Fix It Again, Tony' company).
