Federal school lunch rules that started this fall leave many Central New York students hungry

Students all over Central New York – and the United States - say new federal guidelines for making school lunches healthier are instead resulting in hungrier kids....

The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which went into effect this fall. The law dictates what is served in school cafeterias during lunch hour in an effort to set and improve nutrition standard.

Some of the changes include age-based calorie restrictions, serving more whole grains and less sugar, requiring students to take a fruit or vegetable on their tray, and only allowing low- or non-fat milk. Calories are limited to 650 calories for grades K-5, 700 for grades 6-8 and 850 for high schoolers.

In many schools, that means the main entrée is often smaller....

“I have to buy two bags of chips to get enough,” [one student] said. “And when I get an apple and start to eat it, it’s usually all brown and mushy. I like the applesauce, but they give you a half of a scoop, which is two spoonfuls. That’s not enough.

“And now we can’t have snacks in the classroom because of allergies, so if I have to stay after school I have no energy,” he said. “And I eat lunch at 10:56 a.m.”

Interesting article about an issue related to "...health, education...and other cultural and societal issues."

It's the kids fault, eh?

Schools should not be feeding anybody especially the kids..
They should not be clothing, grooming, or transporting the kids either..

Their job is merely to teach the kids.. its the kids job to show up.. if they don’t show up (( GOOD ))..

If the kid has good parents or bad parents its none of the schools business.. its the kids business..

The schools have become BUSY-BODY.. GOSSIPS..
Teachers are over paid and over appreciated..
Public school has become and ENTITLEMENT when it is NOT..
NO ONE is entitled to education.. money.. or a job..

Only politically stupid women think that way.. busy bodies.....

the children of today after being filled with years and years of propaganda claiming that vegetables and fruit are beneficial will now be forcibly starved in the public schools by only have vegetables available to eat.

The kids in our schools are now facing the same nutritional reality as the characters in “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.”

Why don’t they just drop all pretense and go all out and feed the kids boiled grass, like the Russians do to the prisoners in a Gulag.

A very good idea, komrade. This way, when the kids beg for real food, the gubmint kin dangle a morsel of meat to go with the tree bark soup now and then and make them sing praises for hussein first for providing for them before/befo' they eat.

Obama - The Reverse Midas

Everything King Obama touches turns to excrement.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare):

Makes health care less available and more costly.

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010:

Makes meals for children less appealing and leaves kids more hungry.

Not very nutritional of course. Look at North Korea where the poorest “kobetchi” might try to survive on grass, they often starve before they are 25-30 years old

If you are a serf in Obama’s America, you will eat what you are allotted and LIKE IT. Soon, I bet the extra purchases and throwing away of food will be prohibited and students caught deviating from the instructions will receive punishments and the parents, if any, called.

when Eric Holder’s people (most are waddling mamas) and their myriad brood come trick-or-treating to my door this year, I think I will have out for them a bowl of carrot sticks and a picture of the wookie

If they want to go away hungry, offer fasting and prayer. It will be good for most American children. Feed the ones who receive it with gratitude. Deaf ear to the rest.

>> UNION Teachers are over paid and over appreciated..

Just wanted to edit that. I have a masters and 8 years experience and get paid the low end of 40K to micromanage 120 teenagers a year.

You need to wait until they start “body-fat index” testing.

10 1/2., 60% employeepays/40% employer pays, none (can be fired after 3 warnings), blue cross/shield (have to drive 70 miles for dental coverage), 10 a year, none, none, none, etc.

As I said, NON-union teachers are pretty much in line with the private market. It’s the unions that have to go. I’ve never even heard of a clothing allowance. Plus, I had $500 furloughed last year so my district could make budget.
