By Mr. Curmudgeon:
Super Storm Sandy was a big campaign commercial for Obama. At least that's what David Firestone at the New York Times says.
"... In the modern era, the most important cash comes from taking people's tax dollars and distributing them in the form of federal aid to communities hard-hit by disaster. Because that involves the federal government, it is tainted in the minds of Mr. Romney and his party. It is compulsory, and thus not an offering of the heart."
Firestone also condemned Mitt Romney's effort to collect relief supplies for storm victims for "making people feel as if they're contributing." In other words, sincere, individual acts of compassion are irrelevant when compared to bighearted big government.
Like most Progressives, Firestone confuses royal supremacy with softheartedness, extortion with empathy.
Back in the early 1990s, former President Bill Clinton - who is vigorously campaigning in swing-states on behalf of Obama - sicked his Attorney General Janet Reno on banks reluctant to underwrite sub-prime loans. And that's not all.
"Andrew Cuomo, the youngest Housing and Urban Development secretary in history, made a series of decisions between 1997 and 2001 that gave birth to the country's current crisis," wrote Wayne Barrett in a 2008 article in the lefty Village Voice. "... He turned the Federal Housing Administration mortgage program into a sweetheart lender with sky-high loan ceilings and no money down, and he legalized what a federal judge has branded 'kickbacks' to brokers that have fueled the sale of overpriced and unsupportable loans. Three to four million families are now facing foreclosure, and Cuomo is one of the reasons why."
Today, many more New York homes are underwater. I don't mean because of Super Storm Sandy - but in terms of value. New Yorkers can thank compassionate big government and their state's Democratic governor - Andrew Cuomo. As big as Sandy appeared in satellite photos, nature is limited in its destructiveness when compared to redistributive, compassionate, big government.
Big government apologists (especially among the mainstream media) continually browbeat small-government advocates that would restrain federal power to shield our liberties and pocketbooks. The government's "taking people's tax dollars and distributing them in the form of federal aid," they say, allows big government to do big things.
That was certainly the rationale behind the big-government's "affordable housing" policy. That scheme funneled trillions of dollars away from a sustainable free economy and poured it into an unsustainable Ponzi scheme. Big government compassion brought about the globe's financial collapse - from Vallejo, California, to Vouprasia, Greece.
If President Obama's re-election is doomed, it's because falling home prices, a $16 trillion national debt, high unemployment and a shrinking economy are stark reminders of what happens when big government lends a compassionate helping hand.
It's not just "the minds of Mr. Romney and his party" that are "tainted" against Super Storm Big Government. Its victims have had enough and will register their displeasure on November 6. Obama and his big government are about to meet the perfect storm ... Super Storm "We the People."

In Katrina, the Navy came in right behind the storm and helos were in the air as soon as conditions permitted. With Obozo in charge there was nothing for two days.
"If a Republican were President, we would have heard..."
Even if you grant Firestone’s point that you need a national government to help out during a national disaster like Sandy, it doesn’t need to be nearly as big as it is. The Salvation Army or Samaritan’s Purse does much more with much less.
And I’m not going to even mention how the Fed “helped” during Katrina.
When rebuilding several states after this hurricane is estimated to cost between 20-30 billion dollars, how in God’s green earth did this corrupt president and his henchmen managed to spend SIX TRILLION in four years???
These criminals should go to jail for looting the nation’s treasury and every dollar should be clawed back from their off-shore accounts.
This is the universal leftist attitude toward charity. In Communist countries private charity is a serious crime. It is construed as a claim that the government isn't doing its job and that people can accomplish something outside of the Government. It implies loyalties and attention to something other than the Government, which cannot be tolerated.
FEMA needs to be eliminated. I see the mayor of NJ is already calling for FEMA to pay for dune restoration.
The pigs are muscling up to the trough.
“The government’s “taking people’s tax dollars and distributing them in the form of federal aid,” they say, allows big government to do big things.”
What could possibly go wrong?
The ideal situation would be for citizens to pool their money together into a disaster trust fund. Unfortunately, as we have learned with the Social Security lock box, the US government is the last organization on Earth that should be trusted with securing funds for a future expenditure.
