The scale of the mammoth challenge facing authorities in the US following Superstorm Sandy was clear to see today in the flood-hit state of New Jersey. National Guard troops arrived in the devastated city of Hoboken to help evacuate thousands of people still stuck in their homes. Trucks were delivering ready-to-eat meals and evacuating the area, across the Hudson River from New York City - half of which remains flooded two days after the storm struck.
Thousands of people are still holed up in their brownstones, condos, and other housing in the square city. The Mayor's spokesman said many people are

The National Guard is finally there?
Where were they, Haiti?
Why has it taken Obama 2 days to get the NG into Hoboken?
Obama doesn’t control the National Guard in state emergencies, the Governor does.
The Governors of all of the affected states had called up the Guard, and they were out staged before the storm struck. Once it hit, the Governors (through their state chains of command) moved the forces to meet the need, and increased call-ups as needed.
If we only knew exactly what the storm would take out the worst, we could be there ready for it. We have to do the best we can, and then adjust as it develops.
My friend’s husband is in the National Guard in RI and they were mobilized prior to the storm on Oct 27th. I think I remember her saying that he was in New york yesterday transporting people by ambulance.
OMG!!!! How are all the poor people in that building going to get out!!?? There must be over one foot of water in that lobby!! Call out the NG!!
(Hmm. I wonder if ANYBODY in that fancy building even has a pair of rubber boots they could slip on so they don’t get their socks wet?)
P.S. I know there are MANY areas that are underwater and would be dangerous to try to leave without help - but this sure doesn’t look like one of them. And why would Manning have a “dejected” look? I doubt his apartment is in the basement.
awesome. I guess more is on the way too. From other states.
You would hope not.
Maybe the basement was his man-cave?
Some of these flooding pics look like Katrina pics.
That’s correct - when one state’s National Guard is tapped out, surrounding states help out at the request of the governor.
My state, along with a lot of other states, moved aviation, medical, and other troops and equipment to Louisiana and Mississippi to help with Katrina.
and I guess their arrivals are coordinated on an as/where needed basis
I was simply applying the same standard to Obama that the dems did to Bush after Katrina. Sorry I failed to put up the obligatory satire alert
Each state has its Emergency Operations Center, which will task out the units to counties/localities at their request. Even pushed out early, the Guard soldiers and their equipment need to move through some pretty hellish conditions (downed trees, deep flood water, destroyed roads) to reach their goal, and it ain’t always as quick-moving as they’d like.
If this storm had hit after sequestration there would be no NG to send anywhere.
I am sure they can’t all arrive at the same time, that would become a bottleneck. The EOC is also coordinating the utility crews from other states, right or is the power company able to direct those where needed on their own?
Judging by the steps and the length of the handrail, 12-18 inches max. Notice, too, the power is on.
No prob, it gives an opportunity to explain to a lot of people what the Guard is and what we actually do.
Every one of these events brings out some pretty awesome moments from those guys and gals. A couple of years ago during a blizzard in West Virginia, a couple of young troopers were sent out to recover a young mother and her newborn from a house on a mountain when the power went out. Their Humvee could only get them within three miles, so they went the rest of the way on foot. Made some do-it-yourself snow shoes from branches and clothesline, and got to the house. They wrapped the baby in every blamnket around and put him in a ruck sack, and got the mom and baby out safe.
Every storm has stories like this.
Obama left Eli Manning behind? Save him.
Why couldn’t Eli take the photo of Kate Mara instead?
They need to send Engineers units in to clear the sewers.
