And as a parent, how do you let sh$t happen and you haven’t provided for some granola bars, shelf stable or powdered milk, canned food that can be eaten cold, etc.?

I've read posts from people like that. They claim they'd rather just die on the spot than have to struggle through even the shortest of emergencies. When you ask what that would do to their kids, they are too focused on themselves to care. It's sickening that there are people like that.

Totally agree with you. “It is their own damn fault” for not listening. When you have a whole week of warning, why in the world would you not at least go out and buy basic food supplies and grab a couple of gas cans just in case. We believe in being prepared all the time.

A friend was at a local supermarket yesterday; there was a little skim milk left, no bread.

While I think people are responsible for themselves, I’m getting the impression that a lot of people who should have been ordered out weren’t.

The better dressed a person is, the less likely they have ever gone hungry for more than a few hours. Besides, do they not have more than two days of canned food in their house. Cold green beans may not sound appetizing, but hunger is a a great seasoning.

Maybe Anna Wintour and Sarah Jessica Parker will host a dumpster dive dinner party to raise $4 million for disaster relief

A knapsack wouldn’t even carry the water a person would need for a week. We’re OK because I have prepper levels of camping material (including food), but when power, gas, and stores are out of the picture it is rough.

Urbanites generally don’t keep a lot of food in their homes.

Many people don’t have enough food to last out the week if they lost their jobs and some don’t even have a roof over their head. Most pantry’s run out of food so people go to the supermarkets and dumpster dive.

I'm still not buying it's not a set up but if it isn't then they're there every day so it's not a result of the storm. Since they're there every day, then the reporter is lying and he knew he could twist it into a news story.

Not too many years ago, before laws cracked down on the practice, our grocery store would set out foods that had expired the day before onto pallets and tables out back for anyone to take home. If they got in a delivery of produce, they'd put the older produce out in bags so it wouldn't get dirty and people could easily carry it. That was much better than filthy dumpsters. When the government put a stop to it, they would donate it to the senior center but there was so much that the center would give it to everyone so the community got around the government. It wasn't a shameful thing as everyone would stop by. Waste not, want not.

It’s been more than three days already, and I suspect the despair is being caused by the fact that they’re being told this could go on for another week.

Many of these people should have been told to evacuate, and they weren’t.

If any of those nobama-divers in the picture had to endure extreme hardship (e.g., WWII Stalingrad or Shackleton’s Antartic trivails), they’d sit down and die. Get a backbone, you libs.

I think they are there everyday. With the lawsuits you have to be careful what you give away.We have a little pantry and as quick as food comes in it goes out.

Should have been told??? Why should they have to be told? Can they not think for themselves? Did they not hear Sandy was coming for a week ahead of time? Helloooo!

The last big flood we had put 20+ feet of water in my front yard and no one told me to bring stuff up to higher ground or secure what couldn't be brought up or to have a full pantry or top off the gas in the vehicles or to evacuate with the kids and pets. In fact, **I** was calling the sheriff's department to give them warning.
