Bloomberg Endorses Obama, Citing Climate Change
NY Times ^

In a surprise announcement, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Thursday that Hurricane Sandy had reshaped his thinking about the presidential campaign and that as a result he was endorsing President Obama.

Mr. Bloomberg, a political independent in his third term leading New York City, has been sharply critical of both Mr. Obama, a Democrat, and Mitt Romney, the president’s Republican rival, saying that both men have failed to candidly confront the problems afflicting the nation. But he said he had decided over the past several days that Mr. Obama was the best candidate to tackle the global climate change that the mayor believes contributed to the violent storm, which took the lives of at least 38 New Yorkers and caused billions of dollars in damage.

“The devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City and much of the Northeast — in lost lives, lost homes and lost business — brought the stakes of next Tuesday’s presidential election into sharp relief,” Mr. Bloomberg wrote in an editorial for Bloomberg View.

“Our climate is changing,” he wrote. “And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it may be — given the devastation it is wreaking — should be enough to compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.”

To Mayor DUH,

When you build a community, town, city, or even a home right on a coast line there is likely odds it will be hit by a catastrophic storm. North Atlantic in a storm rage can best be described as Bering Sea East and every bit as belligerent & unforgiving in nature. This just happened to be one of those type of major storms. Nothing more nothing less. Best thing to do is stay out of it's path.

Natural occurrences have many times over more to do with how storms hit and how temperatures increase or decrease than mans so called Carbon Foot Print or man made climate change urban legends. I see this endorsement for Obama as nothing more than a power play. There is a significant number of persons wanting to rule their own little section of the world. Man has no more to do with the Global Climate Change than drinking a 32 Ounce Coke.

Sea Walls are our friend Mr Mayor. Perhaps more Breaks in key places should have been built? Or perhaps a Mandate from your office ordering the storm away would have worked better /sarcasm.

Perhaps it is often wiser to plan ahead, plan for disaster, reduce risk by building critical infrastructure higher above sea level. Ports like Norfolk Virginia have been hit by canes for years. Critical portions of your city's transportation system is built underwater. What did you think would happen?

The Sea respects no one mayor not even Thee.

The most unfortunate reality smacking these folks is their false sense of security. "This only happens in the South" is a common theme.

I've seen North Atlantic Waves break over a flight deck. I think it was in late 1979 we were about 500 miles from one and it wasn't no picnic even on a carrier.

Actually there's a place in Norfolk up in the tip of Ocean view created by a hurricane the name escapes me now. With natural warm sea currents, The swamps of the coast, and Chesapeake Bay feeding the storm, and the Arctic front moving down pushing warm air into it, that was just a perfect storm. I'm near Knoxville. Mt LeConte got over 32 inches of snow from this. Temps in Knoxville dropped over 30 degree high in a day.

I feel bad for the ones suffering through it. Not even East Tennessee is exempt from catastrophic floods and my parents live about 25 feet elevation from a creek bottom. They've been lucky and they understood the risk.

People scream Global Warning and man caused climate change and forget relative recent history in the 1800's where the nation had no summer due to a distant volcano. Now that is a serious threat science and planners need to work on and plan national survivability for rather than this insane junk science. The natural disasters will always be worse.

You’re darn right their close if their near first or second creek. If they live near Little River it has been a bear of late, just wait until 3ft of snow comes rushing down.

Go ahead and take a new trip up top, it’s quite beautiful this time of year.

Global Warming is nothing more than diversion of taxpayer funds to make politicians rich and powerful. Meh.

Get ready for one heck of a snowy winter.

Stay safe.

Oh I remember the 82 Worlds Far Floods real well. LOL They put the power panels for the Canadian Pavillion right above the creek. I worked there as part of the maintenance crew. The Electrican and I had to put on waders to go down and cut the power.

Life is very hard to imitate. I won a big elephant for my girl at that fair! LOL

Glad you didn’t come across 480 in those waders!

Go have a good time and see if that sunsphere has opened for dinner again!

Our creek has rose over the road twice last year. Thankfully, Lord obama has all the answers. with a few spells and a motion of the hand, he will end the climate shift and return the seas to their rightful place. And, my creek will remain in it’s banks. Thank you Lord Barry for intervening....
