New Jersey Is Running Out Of Gasoline And Police Are On Hand

Robert Johnson and Geoffrey Ingersoll
Nov. 1, 2012, 9:21 PM

Once free of the confines of storm stricken Manhattan, it doesn't take long to realize that traveling through New Jersey presents its own daunting set of problems.

The first line of cars stretched along the highway for miles raises more questions than concerns, until it becomes clear that the three mile string of vehicles are all waiting for gasoline to continue on their way.

Eighty percent of New Jersey stations don't even have gas, while police guard closed stations and open stations alike. At one set of pumps we saw a driver who pulled in from from desperation, cutting in front of the line. Drivers near the pumps piled from their cars threatening violence and when we left, the newcomer still sat in his car, windows rolled up, head on his hand — waiting.

Some stations were expecting fuel deliveries today, others had capped purchases hoping not to run out.

Reserve tanks in the area were drained before Sandy to avoid an environmental disaster. The Arthur Kill waterway is closed for major oil spill cleanup, which means no deliveries will be coming from the port in Bayonne. Many terminals themselves are without power and the extent of damage is yet unknown.

Residents told us over-and-over today, generally with a shake of the head and a look into the distance: "This is like nothing I've ever seen."

Just got back from waiting in line. Here is the kicker, it was taking forever not because of volt me but because a guy who filled fifteen gas cans and two fifty gallon tanks. There was nearly a riot and when the station asked the guy to move he told them and everyone else, “tough luck.”

The south sees natural disasters almost yearly and you don’t see us on TV whining about no gas or how “tough” it is. Says a lot about how these ppl expect others or the government to take care of them in a pinch. Got news for you whiners, get the heck over it and get to work taking care of business.

Hopefully it is just killing of the looters.

An acquaintance went to help out in a small town after Katrina. In the morning walking to the place they were going to help clean up they passed a corpse leaning up against a tree with a sign saying “LOOTER”. It wasn't there at the end of the day, although that defeats the purpose.

Christie Sucked up to Zero to save himself from the MSM.
He will not go against Obama while that taste is still in his mouth.

Really? Because I've filled up large, large gasoline powered trucks before, and the pumps limit out until you go inside to have staff do a manual reset.

Not to mention that if there were cops in the area, most urban codes are very restrictive on filling gas cans, not to mention '50 gallon tanks' that require certification.

Besides, what were you doing having to get fuel tonight? You didn't have fuel on hand after all the warning that the entire US got?

They wouldn’t be calling them murders if it was looters getting killed.

Got it, used it, needed more. It was for my generator and not the car. . And this guy was not filling his truck but tanks on the truck that he was using for his landscaping business. I asked if was doimg tree removal and his answer was no, leaf removal. Yeppper, at times like these it sure is important to have clean lawns.

The pumps still limit out on gasoline and require a reset. I think it was 75 gallons when I escorted the convoy doing the technical repo work with 2 each 34' trucks and 2 pickup trucks and the 2 cars and we all tried to fill up at the same pump.

It was a pain.

I was shocked at what gas cans cost now. I am also surprised that these people did not get gas BEFORE the storm!

I mean it was only forecast to hit there for over a week.

Why didn't they fill up before the storm hit? I live in CT. I filled up my car and jerry can on Saturday. My 1990 Toyota Camry has over a 530 mile range on a tank of gas( lasts me over 3 weeks for commuting to work).

To paraphrase Gen. Honore', some people are stuck on stupid.

New Jersey does not allow self service, Christie reaffirmed that as recently as late August 2012, so he was not pumping his own gas.

Why did the attendant required by New Jersey law not just cut him off if the station wanted him to move on?

I know NJ does not allow self service of cars but does for cans and tanks. That is what this guy was refilling. Moreover, the gas stations are so overwhelmed that the attendants are begging us to pump our own.
