CIA Takes Heat for Role in Libya

When the bodies of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans killed in Benghazi, Libya, arrived at Andrews Air Force Base after the Sept. 11 attack, they were greeted by the president, the vice president and the secretaries of state and defense. Conspicuously absent was CIA Director David Petraeus.

Officials close to Mr. Petraeus say he stayed away in an effort to conceal the agency's role in collecting intelligence and providing security in Benghazi. Two of the four men who died that day, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, were former Navy SEAL commandos who were publicly identified as State Department contract security officers, but who actually worked as Central Intelligence Agency contractors, U.S. officials say.

The U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation, according to officials briefed on the intelligence. Of the more than 30 American officials evacuated from Benghazi following the deadly assault, only seven worked for the State Department. Nearly all the rest worked for the CIA, under diplomatic cover, which was a principal purpose of the consulate, these officials said.

Here is the fundamental question: Someone gave an order not to assist or attempt to extract Americans under fire when military assets were available. WHO GAVE THE ORDER?

That is the only relevant question at this point. Why they did not give the order ("fog of war", too little information, yada yada yada) or why they covered it up (what we were told, blah-blah-blah.) These are all secondary questions.

All the reasons, rationales and excuses can be given after that answer. There may even be some good ones. Some may indeed be classified. But the answer to this question is not classified. The answer to this question is immaterial to any investigation currently in progress. And the answer to this question has nothing to do with the roles played by State, CIA, or the military in setting up and conducting operations at the Consulate. The answer to this question has nothing to do with what our Ambassador -- or anyone else -- was actually doing there.

The ex-SEAL Dad is the only person asking the right question: "Who gave the order that my son had to die?"

The question is, why were we in Libya and Egypt to begin with while ignoring, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey?

Ghadaffi had been a very good boy since 911.
Ahmadinajahd? Not so much.

We were in Libya because Ghadaffi had stated most emphatically that he was going to cream the people in Benghazi. Also, Tunisia next door was in revolt, and we were NOT in Egypt. Libya only had a population of about 5 million. Syria has about 25 million and is buddies with Russia. Iran has about 75 million, not quite as many as Egypt with 81 million.

Lebanon if you recall was a real tar baby. President Reagan was forced by public opinion to pull out our peacekeeping force in Lebanon after our embassy was bombed April 1983 killing 63, including about 17 Americans. Then a few months later (October?) the Marine peacekeeper’s barracks was bombed killing 241 US marines. That same day the French were bombed killing over 50 people. Also in the same period a bomb attack on our embassy in Kuwait only killed 6 people because of defective bomb material.

I suspect that Obama thought we, with allies, could help free the people of Libya at a low cost in US lives, and he was successful. Unfortunately, the politics of tribes and cities that suffered and fought is not so easy to settle. You will recall that McCain favored helping Libya too. The tribal/ethnic situation in Lebanon is just as complex in a much smaller space. T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) in his book “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” gives an excellent picture of the fractured nature of the Lebanese population and Arabs in general.

I must say I’m disappointed with Petraeus in all this. Why did he testify to Congresss putting forth the bogus video spontaneous demonstration story when we now know that everybody was informed the day of the attack that Benghazi was an attack by militants? Will we find out the truth in all this after the election? Not likely before...

'We' aren't but 0coward's policy was in a big way and so was MoveOn.org.

And how about the Cairo embassy and Sec. State tweeting apologies all day long on Sept. 11th for the 'anti-Muhammed video?' That's not a presence in Egypt?

My take is that Zero received an ultimatum from the Russians that their AQ proxies were going to shut down the gunrunning operation to the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria by force and he'd better not lift a finger to stop it or face WWIII.

Zero caved.

It's just speculation, but it fits. Think of it as a Cuban missile crisis in reverse.

" ("fog of war", too little information, yada yada yada)"

There was no fog of war. It is certain now that the WH and others had real time intel. They had the cameras inside and out of the facility (which have yet to be released), direct comms with those requesting assistance, and at least one drone overhead. Plus, we know as fact that the Ambassador had requested more security previously, knowing that al-Queda affiliated terrorists were making plans for further attacks after having already lobed bombs over the compound walls of our mission twice prior.

This was simply a failure of Obama and others to protect a high level American representative and his support personnel. The f*cker saw it real time and decided to go to bed for his fundraiser the next day in Las Vegas.

I've followed this more closely than the election, and after reading from those in the know, we had the resources and those willing to risk their lives, but were not given the GO. Sorry, I don't buy the excuse of international borders. Didn't stop Obama (more likely Panetta) from authorizing an incursion into Pakistan to kill bin-Laden, not to mention the numerous drone attacks in Pakistan.

An Ambassador was murdered. That is one of the worst things that can happen to a sovereign country. It's an act of war. And no, I don't care if it were a small group of al-Queda, a true leader would have ordered their rescue no matter what the risk (even Careter attemped). It will be shown that our Armed Forces were ready to go from Sicily and possibly other locations and were told to "stand down" - watch. I am sick about this whole debacle.

Still, the "cult of Obama" may give him another 4 years. THEY WANT STUFF! I'm beginning to hate my fellow Americans.

The Russians have nothing to do with The Disaster’s ineptitude.

Frank Gaffney has latched onto the CIA gunrunning operation having been blown. There are multiple sources citing that such was the reason for Stevens' meeting with the Turkish envoy:

Russia has now moved their contingent of S-400 missiles into much of Syria in anticipation of NATO establishing an “air cap” over Syria. A ten-mile “buffer zone” along Syria’s border has been created for Syrian refugees, but it also acts as a catalyst for the encroachment into Syrian territory. It sets the stage for further advancement and erosion of Syrian land, incrementally, of course.

It is also of critical importance to note that last weekend, Russia completed large-scale exercises of their Strategic Nuclear Forces under the watchful command of President Vladimir Putin. These were the first such nuclear exercises conducted since the fall of the Soviet Union.

To those with discernment, it is obvious that we are at the precipice of World War III. Putin himself stated as much, noting that WW III will not start in Iran but Syria, his own “red line in the sand.” - Source

Looks to me like it's you that's full of nonsense. Better get with the program.

I know all that and have been keeping up with this since the beginning as well.

My point is: behind all the prevarication, stonewalling, and outright lies, these things did not "just happen." ONE PERSON made a decision. Let's not let Joe AADHD Six-Pack be distracted into thinking a clumsy, bloated, bureaucratic government couldn't get information up and down the chain of command quickly enough to respond. At some point ONE PERSON made a decision.

The first question is: WHO GAVE THE ORDER to let these men die?

The first question is: WHO GAVE THE ORDER to let these men die?

There really isn't much doubt about that.

Only the POTUS had the authority to act!

0bama was notified immediately and automatically when the Benghazi consulate triggered the "Imminent Danger Notification System" alert. He did nothing.

Judge Jeanine Investigates Benghazi Gate Part 4 - 10/20/2012 video 6:53
Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer (U.S. Army ret.), former CIA Station Chief Gary Berntsen and former CIA operative Mike Baker

They confirm everything Col. Hunt said about automatic notifications to the WH and add more details.

Howie Carr interview with Col. Hunt On The Newest Libyan Revelations audio 28:37

There are three scandals here...

---------------------------------------------------------

Denial of requests for security were a dereliction of duty. The lies and misdirection about the "video" after the attack were fraud and malfeasance under the color of authority. The inaction during the attack was something more than that.

The failure to act during the attack is the direct equivalent of desertion IMO.

ONE man had the authority to act that night.

ONE man deserted his post!

A very succinct and complete summation. Of course we know the answer. We know that this is a scandal for muliple reasons, on multiple levels. We know there are several cover-ups on several levels which constitute scandals after the fact, and we know that the cover-story led to a large number of injured and dead people who weren't Americans (17 dead people in Pakistan, for example.)

But it's time someone outside of FNC and Talk Radio started asking the big question.

If the rest of the media doesn't start reporting on it soon they are going to expose themselves beyond anyone's doubt that they are corrupt to the core. I'm trying to see the downside in that.

One more line of thought before I turn in...

Herridge On Cable Month Before Benghazi Attack: "Smoking Gun Warning Here"

There was no surprise about the attack. There was no 'failure of intel.' The attack was predicted in precise detail a month before it occurred. The draw down of security had to be intentional.

CIA Sources: Obama ordered military not to help Ambassador Stevens

The failure to approve a rescue had to be intentional.

Sources: Key task force not convened during Benghazi consulate attack

Keeping the Counterterrorism Security Group (CSG) in the dark about the attack had to be intentional.

Tweeting apologies for the 'anti-Muhammed video' beginning early that morning, repeatedly blaming all the violence at all of our embassies on the 'video' and making an apology video to air in Pakistan had to be intentional.

Stevens presence in Benghazi on 9-11 had to be intentional.

For the record ... zer0 and mclame did the deed. Would have been better to not become involved. Was a bad idea from the start. The terrible thing is the loss of lives is not over. Too bad zer0 and mclame could not have been controlled and stopped. Then there is Ambassador Stevens and three more lives lost. Which brings our nation to syria and the lives lost. Am of the belief, the entire region is in turmoil due to zer0 and mclame along with all of zer0’s crowd and the lack of congress to stop them all. A prayer it does not become more ugly in that region, but being a realist am not optimistic. Too many people have died. We would have been wise to not become involved. Another terrible thing is, we are involved, and now it has to be cleaned up. zer0, the zer0 crowd, mclame, nearly all of congress are not qualified to clean this up. It is time for a change. Mitt maybe will not succeed. I do not know. For certain though, most of the crowd now in d.c. is virtually clueless as to where to start. May God smile upon our nation, one more time, for the future being in doubt, leaves no doubt as to where we are headed if zer0 and his crowd remain in control.
