Scope of Sandy's Devastation Widens, Death Toll Spirals (Nearing 100)
Reuters ^ | Friday, November 2, 2012 | Edith Honan

From New York City's Staten Island to the popular beach towns of the Jersey Shore, rescuers and officials on Friday faced growing evidence of widespread destruction wrought by superstorm Sandy, mounting anger over delayed relief and a rising death toll.

The total killed in one of the biggest storms to hit the United States jumped by a third on Thursday alone, to 98. In New York City, 40 people have been found dead, half of them in Staten Island, which was overrun by a wall of water on Monday.

Among the dead in Staten Island were two brothers, aged 2 and 4, who were swept from their mother's arms after her car stalled in rising flood waters. Their bodies were found near each other in a marshy area on Thursday.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Federal Emergency Management Agency Deputy Administrator Richard Serino planned to visit Staten Island on Friday amid angry claims by some survivors that the borough had been ignored.

Scenes of angry storm victims could complicate matters for politicians, from President Barack Obama just four days before the general election, to governors and mayors in the most heavily populated region in the United States. Obama visited New Jersey on Wednesday and has received praise for his handling of Sandy.

"They forgot about us," said Theresa Connor, 42, describing her Staten Island neighborhood as having been "annihilated." "And (Mayor Michael) Bloomberg said New York is fine. The marathon is on!"

Fury has been escalating throughout New York at Bloomberg's decision to proceed with the world's largest marathon on Sunday, vowing the event - which attracts more than 40,000 runners - would not divert any resources storm victims.

Anger over delayed relief??? What the heck???

The liberals have been praising Obama and his strong response to this disaster. They have been making comparisons with Bush and Katrina.

You mean that there are problems out there? Really?? With Obama in charge???????

I’m shocked, just shocked................

Exactly. Typical liberal bs. As long as you have a photo op and say everything is great then it is right? Forget that people are still waiting for relief.

The MSM has offered self-indulgent coverage of its own reporters’ childhood stomping grounds, and repetitive photos of the same scenes, the rooftop crane and the trashed roller coaster. You’d think one of the networks, or maybe The Red Cross or FEMA might have thought to check Staten Island before today. Haven’t heard much from MSM on other hard hit states, not even much on CT.

I’d bet they would like an Alabama power crew to help. Oh, wait, they’re non-union. Never mind.

Neither FEMA nor the Red Cross has gotten to the Rockaways ... NYC's forgotten stepchild. It's a bad sign when Occupy Wall Street and a Sikh group from Queens are doing a better job at distributing hot food than the largest international relief groups in the world.

The MSM will never make Obama look bad on Sandy.

They’re that deep in the tank for him and in this past week, they’ve pulled out all the stops to get him re-elected. They really have no shame.

If hiding the real scale of the Sandy aftermath is needed to do it, well they’re doing it.

Its not going to change the election outcome but you know, they need to make Obama look like he can make it and they will never desert him.

If you don’t like what you see on your TV, shut it off! Its not going to get any better on the final weekend heading into the election.

If hiding the real scale of the Sandy aftermath is needed to do it, well they’re doing it.

Why not?

They're hiding the disaster in Benghazi.

They're hiding the disastrous employment situation.

They're hiding the disastrously failed 'economic stimulus'.

They're hiding the disastrous nature of 0bamacare.

They're leftists.

They're lying.

It's what leftists do.

It seems the network ghouls are fascinated by death and devastation when they aren’t hiding Obama’s incompetence from the world.

In the April 2011 Mississippi/Alabama tornado deaths (over 200 in Alabama alone), they all vied for the best on-site devastation videos...

These idiot politicians who come from Washington and show up for what is nothing more than a photo-op are morons. Bloomberg did one thing right in this whole mess when he told Obama to stay away because the city couldn't deal with the complications of a presidential visit.

I'll give Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie some credit here. Any time I see them on TV or hear them on the radio, they're giving a press conference that provides important information about the status of the recovery, travel advisories, recommendations for people in certain areas who may be dealing with certain issues, etc.

I give the two New York Senators -- Schumer and Gillibrand -- the award for the most useless demonstration of authority in this crisis. Getting in front of a camera and complaining that the American Red Cross, the National Guard, the United Nations, or anyone else isn't responding quickly or effectively enough ought to disqualify you from holding any public office.
