Outrage grows over decision to run NYC marathon
CBS ^ | 11/2/12

But Staten Island resident George Rosado assailed the decision.

"It's repulsive," said Rosado, who spent two days scrubbing sludge from his tiled floors and was preparing to demolish the water-logged walls of his home a block from the water. He added: "They should be getting resources to the elderly people who can't fend for themselves. That's more important than a marathon right now."

Some marathon runners agreed, posting Facebook messages vowing to head to the race's starting line in Staten Island to spend the day volunteering, not racing.

"Let's not waste resources and attention on a foot race," marathon entrant Penny Krakoff told Gothamist.

Even some hotel owners are taking a stance. The Hilton Garden Inn in Staten Island, which has served as a refuge for people affected by the storm, has vowed to turn away marathoners - even those with reservations - in order to preserve rooms for storm evacuees.

"How do I tell people who have no place to go, that have no home, that have no heat, that you have to leave because I have to make room for somebody who has to run a marathon?" hotel owner Richard Nicotra told New York 1

Now Bloomies wants the runners to donate 26 dollars. A buck for every mile. I’m sure the money will be spent ‘wisely’. Mmmmhmmmm.

What an ASS.

they will have generators running for the event organizers and media in Central Park, while Coney Island just today is beginning to receive vital assistance

a better thing might be to ask every one who registered to run in the Marathon to show up at volunteer work centers on Marathon day, and in as much as the Marathan organizers ARE very well-connected people in New York City, I would think they’d have no problem obtaining information from the city about where volunteers could be helpful the most

give each runner a full gas can and let those without fuel chase them.

there’s enough sewage in the streets without runners crapping themselves.

It just amazes me that Bloomberg would waste much needed resources(i.e police, etc.) during one of his city's worst disasters, on what is now a superficial event.

I guess he figures he is not up for re-election and the people in need in NYC can go do you know what, for the emperor's show must go on.

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES....

...the majority of the people who vote in NYC obviously LIKE what Bloomie is doing since they vote him back into office time after time.

...I am always amazed why people cannot connect dots...they elect people with lunatic ideas, then are surprised that they GET lunatic ideas.

...all they have to do to get things straightened out is simply DON'T ELECT A LUNATIC TO RUN THINGS.....

...but *sigh* people cannot or will not learn from their mistakes...

The “optics” on this is terrible for Bloomberg and anyone associated with him. And that includes President Obama.

Bloomie was comparing himself to Rudy about 20 mins ago on his update. he also said that the reason he was not canceling the Marathon was , “well we don't cancel dropping the ball on New Year's eve when it snows”. the man is quite clueless.

This is another Benghazi. Obama does not want anything negative coming up before the election. He denied that Benghazi was a terrorist attack so that there would be no terrorists on his watch. Now it has been declared that Obama fixed the hurricane, so therefore New York is back to normal. There will be no hurricanes before the election.

26 bucks — that’s about 1/10 of the entry fee according to another FReeper.

How do I tell people who have no place to go ... that you have to leave ...
I'm a former "New Yawker" and marathon runner and the decision to hold the race is wrong.
However, where do (say) 20,000-30,000 runners go when they can't get a room?

I heard that comparison....comparing running a marathon after a terrorist attack that had been weeks prior to running one while folks are thirsty and hungry are not even close. He can say that he is not diverting resources and he may not be directly. But adding the resources used for a stupid foot race to aid those in need could help some child or senior get food and warmth! What a boob this obombo hack is. He obviously is getting regular meals and could care less
