[If it had a reputation as a rough place, this sure doesn’t help.]

I lived and worked in New England for a couple of years in the 1980’s. My business would take me to Bridgeport. Even back then there were sections of the city where law enforcement did not go unless it was an absolute emergency.

As a wife of a lineman currently working back in that area I take offense to this Mayors comment.
These linemen work hard my husband worked all day yesterday at his regular job with the electric company caught a red eye arrived early am in New York and worked till 7:30 my time (CA time) and was heading to bed to get up @ 3:30 am to head back out to work
These men and women work in elements that are risky and sometimes do 24 hours shifts. The Mayor is very disrespectful, it is about the grids, who gets power first fire, police, hospital etc etc maybe he needs to go and take a journeyman lineman program and see what is involved. His comment is as stupid as the CA person a couple years back that said “all they have to do is plug the wires into each other” no dumb++s it is more involved. Many linemen die every year from work related issues. Give this guys and gals the respect they deserve TRUST ME all those people back east they want to get your power on as quickly as possible but they need to do it safely. And for the egg throwing people you could possible enjoy one of those line man but causing them to get zapped as you throwing items at them.

I believe UI has pulled all crews out of the city until they provide police protection. This supposedly started after the Dem mayor played the race or wealth card.

My last statement is you could hurt one of the linemen by causing them to get zapped

My sister was director of maintenance for a large Mid-Atlantic utility company, she’s moved up since then, EVERY utility crew has daily safety meetings before each shift, they are doing a very dangerous job, my son worked with a tree service assigned to that utility for several summers during college (thanks, sis!), he’s always complained about having the daily safety briefings, said they were, “Always beating it into our heads”, I would say, “Did you pay attention?”, he did, they had zero injuries on his crew for two summers...

These guys are doing very dangerous work, the first egg, my sister (Type A, I love her, takes after her AF/MD ANG full bird pilot Dad) would have pulled every crew from the area, they did the right thing, there is no fooling around when it comes to electrical utilities...

“Mayor Bill Finch said the utility was taking care of wealthy suburbs while his constituents suffered.”

Way to keep every one calm, genius. Play the class warfare card and probably a thinly-veiled race card.

Angry residents pelted utility crews with eggs as they tried to restore power in Bridgeport, Conn.,

Well that certainly was helpful..

Every rural person I ever met in the NE were conservative and very nice people. I remember a guy who sold fruits and vegetables from a little stand on the side of the road in R.I. His grandchild was the 7th generation to live off that land. He said he wouldn’t give two cents for the entire city of New York.

"I’d think it wiser to use the eggs as food instead of using them as projectiles."

No, no, no.

To do that, you'd have to turn on the stove and exert the effort to cook something. That's not food.

Food is what you get in a bag at McDonald's after you swipe your EBT card.

(Cookin' jes be fo crackas an' suckas!)

Let 'em freeze in the dark.....

LOL, I haven't heard that since my first winter in Alaska 38 years ago. "Don't eat yellow snow".

"power also means light and security.... something that punk looters do not like"

when they were going to put street lights in my neighborhood 2 friends, one sheriff and the other a city cop said stop them if you can because it will guarantee an increase in burglaries and stripped cars.

Crooks love street lights because they can operate without artificial light.

At my office which was in the ghetto on Saturday or Sunday morning there would be stripped cars under the street lights at each intersection.

You know - Just as an aside.

I haven’t changed my tagline in some time now. But in the wake of this storm and watching how the Random Idiot Bastards of the Blue States are dealing with this, that tagline has never been more appropriate.

(Contrast, if you will, this current behavior to the way the folks in Tennessee, Iowa, Nebraska and other Plains States dealt with flooding in recent memory - with nary a scrap of help from the Feds.)

Hmmmmm ... “Random Idiot Bastards of the Blue States” ... great name for a rock band.

Another during the Alaska pipeline frenzy of 75 was a bumper sticker: “Happiness is a Texan going South with an Okie under each arm”.

My former husband was an electrical lineman.
I have a tiny bit of inside information regarding the field.

PMIs-Preventive Maintenance Inspections-are both basic and critical in power production and distribution.

Downed power lines will kill people. Everytime. Everywhere.
It's a very, very bad thing when power substations explode.

I’m kinda amazed. Here in the DC region, with the PEPCO electrical guys....folks have gone ten and fourteen days without power. No riots....no violence.

I saw where the NY union linemen forced the linemen, who had driven from Alabama to help, to go home. If I were the mayor I would issue a proclamation stating that anyone interfering with the work of linemen from any part of the country will be arrested. It’s disgusting.

We ran one of those road-side vegatable stands in Maine as well. We would be in the field harvesting and the stand was by honor system. The customers would weigh their own produce and count their own corn, cukes, etc. And then the customer would put the money into a box that could have been easily pilfered. Now that was in the ‘80s but we still run the campfire wood the same way on the side of the road.
A few times in the summer someone will take without paying but I still pray God would bless them. We took off with 20 bundles on the stand in the morning and returned after dark. All bundles of wood ($2.50/bundle) were sold and $50 was in the glass jar. No one took from the unattended glass jar. It does still happen in rural Maine.
