Calif. Gov. Brown: DOJ, Obama should 'respect' state marijuana laws
By Zack Colman - 11/11/12 10:12 AM ET
California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said the federal government should let recently passed marijuana legalization laws stand in Colorado and Washington.
Its time for the Justice Department to recognize the sovereignty of the states, Brown said Sunday on CNNs State of the Union. I believe the president and the Department of Justice ought to respect the will of these states.
Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana for recreational use through ballot measures last week.
But marijuana is still outlawed at the federal level, which likely foretells a legal battle over implementing the state laws.
President Obama cracked down on medical marijuana producers after signaling during his 2008 campaign that he would permit that activity. Raids were frequent in California, where using marijuana for medical reasons has been permitted for years.
Against that background and the recently approved Colorado and Washington laws, Brown said the federal government shouldnt try to nullify reasonable state measures.
Like he respects state immigration laws, or state voter id laws, or state health care was, or. . . . Well, you get the idea
States Rights? Gee, where are George Wallace and Lester Maddox when you need them?
Interesting. Some leftist states may want secession so they can keep hitting their bongs. Hey. Whatever it takes. I guess.
Question on “Medical” Marijuana?...if its “Medical”... shouldn’t it be payed for by Obamacare?
I expect that Obama will be making a lot more trips to California just to take advantage of the new law.
No "I stubbed my toe" excuse required.
For pot, yes because it fulfills his agenda. For obamacare and other issues? Fat chance.
Please ping me with any Southern California related articles. Thank you!

Reasonable = Leftist. Nullification is only good for Leftist causes. Otherwise, nullification of 0-care means that you are a redneck, Southern, lost cause rebel.
If this works, then maybe Obama will respect the vote in several states to not participate in ObamaCare. Maybe Obama will support the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions whereby states can nullify Federal laws (and regulations) they sufficiently object to.
Somehow I don’t don’t think this will come to pass.
if my governor in colorado, a dim POS, had any spine he would tell the feds to stick it up their obama and order the state police to arrrest any federali attempting to enforce any fed law contrary to this. he doesn’t so he won’t.
ps i voted against legalization because it was to be a state constitution ammendment. it is way too easy to get ammendments passed than laws.
Not so fast. Federal regulation of intrastate drugs is based on the same expansive interpretation of the Commerce Clause as federal control over health care, education and the environment. These all occur at the expense of the Tenth Amendment.
Agreed?
Which is precisely why we needed a Constitutional Amendment to Ban Alcohol. Nothing has changed except the irrational, illogical, yet incomprehensible rulings from 9 scumbag lawyers.
Moonbeam may also want to touch base with Arizona on the issue of Federal interference over state law.
