Some media pundits see in the growing proportion of non-white groups in the population a growing opposition to the Republican Party that will sooner or later make it virtually impossible for Republicans to win presidential elections or even to control either house of Congress. But is demography destiny?
Conventional wisdom in the Republican establishment is that what the GOP needs to do, in order to win black votes or Hispanic votes, is to craft policies specifically targeting these groups. In other words, Republicans need to become more like Democrats.
Whether in a racial context or in other contexts, the supposed need for Republicans to become more like Democrats has long been a recurring theme of the moderate Republican establishment, going back more than half a century.
Yet the most successful Republican presidential candidate during that long period was a man who went completely counter to that conventional wisdom namely, Ronald Reagan, who won back to back landslide election victories.
Meanwhile, moderate Republican presidential candidate after moderate Republican presidential candidate has gone down to defeat, even against Democratic presidential candidates who were unpopular (Harry Truman), previously unknown (Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton) or who had a terrible economic track record (Barack Obama).
None of this seems to have caused any second thoughts in the Republican establishment. So long as that remains the case, demography may indeed be destiny and that destiny could be Democratic administrations as far out as the eye can see.
If non-white voters can only be gotten by pandering to them with goodies earmarked for them, then Republicans are doomed, even if they choose to go that route. Why should anyone who wants racially earmarked goodies vote for Republicans, when the Democrats already have a track record of delivering such goodies?

It's pathetic that the MSM is so in the tank for the Rats and it won't be changing real soon.
Demography is not destiny.
CULTURE is destiny.
The invading barbarians have brought their culture with them, and too much of today’s youth have adopted the urban ghetto “gangsta” culture.
Between the two, we ARE doomed.
I’d betcha nobody at the RNC is listening to the man with the plan jaz. Thanks for the ping.
Toothpick, you and I think a lot alike. Too many people vote based on what they are told, not based upon what is true. It’s a shame that we can’t filter out such people if they are ignorant of political truths. The malleable ignorant voter. Its my strong belief that if only informed voters (those who really had an understanding of political truths... principles of the founding fathers, free-market principles, liberty principles, history of Marxism/ProgressiveIdeology, difference between “right” and “left” etc...) were allowed to vote, that the Democrats would never win another election.
-—”What Republicans need are MORE PEOPLE who look like Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Star Parker, Allen West, Lloyd Marcus, and Mia Love who are constantly in the forefront defending our values!”
You are SOOO right. I view that as the ONLY way we can elect a conservative in this ANTI-WHITE racist country.
We need a “Trojan Horse” (like Hermain Cain was to be) to get elected and then thru example and leadership make being conservative “cool.”
This country is just too racist (read: anti-White) to elect a white conservative.
Common sense article by Dr. Sowell; common sense, unfortunately, is not very common with the political elites in the Republican party.
His theory is that if we just explain why our policies are better for the voter (because the benefits are not self-evident) they will vote for us.
He's giving them too much credit.
This election has reinforced for me that: The Right hopes that th voters are smart. The Left knows that the voters are stupid.
And frankly what conservative would even want the job ruling over a bunch of stupid people in the first place?

GREAT article - there’s a reason why Bill Ayers chose to enter the field of “education”. It just took one generation to re-program the yutes.
The voters are stupid. The Dems play politics 24/7. Republicans only every election cycle. That puts us at a distinct disadvantage. To convince some poor/minorities to come out way is a very difficult challenge. How do you fight free food? The answer - school vouchers and medical IRAS for the poor. We talk about these things but we never do it. It would not cost more money because we are just shifting existing resources directly into people’s hands rather than through government agencies. Half the poor are too damn lazy to want that control. They prefer to be slaves. But the other half we got a shot at. The goal is to implement these things in just one state and make them work. Other states will follow. The Dems will fight these initiatives because they are not about helping poor people but controlling them.
Amen.
Yes, we need to starve the beast, I would rather put my extra taxed money into a 401k, an IRA or real estate and make tons of capital improvements, than send a dime to DC.
I would rather take the risk of loss, another tax write off, in the stock market or real estate than send anything to DC.
