Catholics Steady On Gay Marriage Bishops also plan to maintain strategy on birth control

By Rachel Zoll November 12, 2012

BALTIMORE — A subdued U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops acknowledged Monday that voters rejected the stands the group took against gay marriage and birth control, but it gave no sign it would change its strategy ahead.

Same-sex marriage supporters made a four-state sweep of ballot measures last week, despite intensive advocacy by Roman Catholic bishops in favor of traditional marriage. Bishops also spoke out sharply against President Obama’s mandate that most employers provide health insurance that covers artificial contraception. Critics accused the bishops of going so far that they appeared to be backing Republican Mitt Romney.

The bishops insist their complaints were not partisan. Still, they now must face four more years with an administration many bishops characterized as a threat to the church.

“We’ve always maintained our openness to dialogue, and that will continue,” said Baltimore Archbishop William Lori, who leads the bishops’ committee on religious liberty. “As this evolves, as rule-making gets a little more clear, then our range of options will be clearer.”

(snip)

Mr. Obama won the overall Catholic vote, 50 percent to 48 percent, but Catholics split on ethnic lines. White Catholics supported Mr. Romney, 59 percent to 40 percent. Latino Catholics, however, went for Mr. Obama, 75 percent to 21 percent.

Last week, Maine, Maryland and Washington became the first states ever to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote. In Minnesota, voters rejected a proposal to place a ban on gay marriage in the state constitution, a step taken in past elections in 30 other states.

I’m only referring to those who voted for zero. Not those who hold true to their faith and teachings.

EXCUSE ME! Just who do you think you are to judge me, a conservative Roman Catholic as not being a Christian? Who? You have absolutely NO right to assume that!! I am really disgusted with some people on here like YOU!! I’ll pray for you, because I am a Christian just like you think you are! I did not vote for Obama, and have never, as far as I remember, have voted for a socialist; nor have a lot of people I know voted for him or any liberal president or public figure!

I don’t know how people like you can say that; and I don’t want to hear you or anyone else with your rude attitude saying that Catholics are not Christians; please reconsider your nasty attitude, because I believe your going to hear from a lot of disgusted people!

Hear ye, hear ye, the first Christians for a 1000 years plus before the first Protestants ever set foot on the world stage.

Mr. Obama won the overall Catholic vote, 50 percent to 48 percent (from the article)

Obviously the majority of Catholics do not in fact follow the bible. By their acts we shall know them.

Calumny is a serious sin - even when leveled against whole groups of people. You know nothing about Catholics, what we believe, nor our practices. Why not be honest and learn about these things FROM CATHOLICS THEMSELVES not the purveyors of lies. Or are you content in your brand of Christianity to lie?

This is what I don't get about the Catholic bishops:

They could really help make the HHS mandates irrelevant simply by getting astute Catholic professionals (lawyers, CPAs, etc.) on board to craft legitimate ways around them. This is what's happening with some of these prominent restaurant and grocery store chains who are going out and simply hiring part-time workers instead of full-time workers.

Another -- perhaps easier -- option is to simply break large institutions into smaller ones with fewer employees. Instead of having a Catholic university with several thousand employees, just have all the departments organized separately as different employers and make sure none of them has more than 50 employees.

Step 1 should be the public excommunication of HHS head Kathy Sebelius, with specific disciplinary measures in place against any clergy member who allows her access to the Catholic sacraments.

P.S. Don't hold your breath. None of this is going to happen.

Well you’re certainly right at that! (I was furious at this person, but calmed down now. Still gripes me though!)

‘I don’t want to hear Catholics tell me they are Christians. Their views and votes aren’t Biblical, so therefore, I reject the fact that they are.’

So what faith are you?

Fifteen hundred. Three Quarters of the history of Christianity happened before Protestantism.

“Fifteen hundred”

Yes, I was being generous, please note I added a “plus”. I like round numbers for effect.

Do Protestant Christian Churches recognize Protestant Blacks as Christian?

Still waiting for the excommunications.

What are you waiting for on the Protestant side?

Look up what has been done, publicly, by Sebellius’s bishop regarding Holy Communion.

Mr. Obama won the overall Catholic vote, 50 percent to 48 percent

Lost the white Catholic vote by 19 %; won the Hispanic by 75/21.

The obvious parallel is White/Black Protestants.

By their acts we shall know them.

Unless they are non-Catholic?

No, Catholic teaching has remained consistent, more consistent on morals such as birth control and abortion than Protestants. It is a culture vs. religion issue. Or going deeper: a me vs. God issue.

I would presume so although “Protestant Christian Churches” covers quite a bit of territory.

Six out of ten white Catholics favored Romney, and if you excluded Catholics in New York, New Jersey, and New England, I suspect that percentage would be higher. Cajun Catholic dominated South Louisiana was won by Romney by margins rivaling those in Anglo-Celtic Baptist dominated North Louisiana. The French and German Catholic settled counties south of St. Louis were carried by Romney.

It appears that white Catholic, Protestant, and Mormon citizens are squared off against blacks, Hispanics, American Indians, Jews, Asians, and Middle Easterners. Interstate 81 in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states divides traditional America against the liberals and Americans of non-European descent. Interstate 5 serves as a similar divide on the West Coast, Interstate 10 in Texas, and Interstate 4 in Florida
