Scandal Probe Ensnares Commander of U.S., NATO Troops in Afghanistan
The Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, November 13, 2012 | Craig Whitlock

ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT — The FBI probe into the sex scandal that led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus has expanded to ensnare Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced early Tuesday.

According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” emails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall. Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

The FBI first notified the Pentagon of its investigation into Allen’s communications with Kelley on Sunday evening, according to the senior defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the ongoing case.

In response, Pentagon chief Leon E. Panetta referred the investigation to the Defense Department’s Inspector General for further review, according to a statement released by Panetta early Tuesday as he was traveling to Australia.

The latest development in the unfolding scandal has shaken President Obama’s national-security staff and upended his carefully chosen plans for his military and intelligence team in his second term.

It also further calls into question the personal behavior of two of the U.S. military’s highest-ranking and most respected figures, who apparently ignored concerns about the highly sensitive nature of their jobs as they embraced personal relationships with younger women who were not their wives.

In his statement, Panetta said Allen would remain as commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan for now, “while the matter is under investigation and before the facts are determined.”

Now, why does a Tampa housewife, even one thats a “social liason” need to send the General over all NATO forces in Afghanistan 40 pages of email -every single day-, 7 days a week?

The article doesn't actually identify the direction of the email.

This is exactly how MSM handles fair and balanced...not that they care anymore. Before the election hide anything that is damaging to the dimo/liberal agenda. After election, take a breather and throw out a few stories to look like you’re balanced because there’s no danger of hurting the liberal cause.

Yeah, TAMPA BAY TIMES:

This past September, Jill Kelley said she had been named “honorary consulate general to South Korea” and also attended a breakfast at the White House.

Reminds me of a few females during Vietnam War that wore flight jackets with a number of patches. They wrote books using a liberal interpretation of ‘embedded’.

Yes. When is the last time something like this has happened?

In THIS country at least.

Honey trap with a strange cyber component.

Notice both officers have been accused of ‘potentially inappropriate e-mail correspondence’ on the order of 10,000 to 20,000. That’s a very broad spread, but also an unlikely quantity.

Any one who’s run a small business knows right off the bat a work year has 2000 hrs with two week vacation thrown. So these four star theater commanders were sending off 5 to 10 emails off every hour of every day while surrounded by staff and managing war efforts? Not plausible on the face of it except to unemployed folk who live on social networks.

This is starting to smell like a cyber attack done by a rather inept group removed from the realities of every day and military life. Trying to recall that news item about the Obama campaigns very large IT group. The twin sisters need deep scrutiny, there’s a modern day Craig Livingston around somewhere.

See you at Yorktown

Good morning.

Methinks our entire national security apparatus has been compromised...on purpose.

The Clinton years festering. We tried to tell them this kind of stuff would happen if the CIC was allowed to act out without consequences.

How does he have time to run a war when he’s living on his email account? Assuming any of this is true, there’s a huge difference between 20,000 and 30,000. Sounds like numbers being thrown around. Since when did adultery become such a big deal in the govt? So much of this doesn’t compute

If your formal lines of communication had been corrupted, how would you communicate to others?

yep. There is something wrong with her. The poses give it away. She makes Broadwell look respectable. Broadwell, BTW, told Jon Stewart while back that Petraeus’ nickname was “Peaches.”

Wouldn’t surprise me, sadly, if many of the military brass were screwing around. My question is whether senior brass are being targeted. Is there a Mata Hari loose in Washington?

Do you mean he’s relegated to sending emails because other means aren’t secure? If so, that sure seems backwards, but I dont know a lot about technology

Am I reading this correctly?

The same Arab woman involved with outing Betrayus Is involved with another commander who lost his job.

What are the odds of that?

It's uncanny. I can't wrap my head around it either.

Maybe these emails should be in a separate post.

Broadwell does sound unstable to me. I can see why Kelly might have shown them to her FBI friend and he decided to investigate.

Not saying that Kelly is innocent since it looks like she might have been having her own affair or at least an email affair, but to me Broadwell sounds unstable. The fact that Broadwell revealed information no one else had, shows a huge security problem that the FBI chose to ignore.

Petraeus needs to be investigated.

Lots of useful information at this link about Jill Khawam Kelley. Not sure if she’s muslim. Most of the Lebanese families who emigrated during the 1970s were Christian, but not all. They are quite the litigious family.

If these are the real emails, another interesting thing is the date. Nov 7,2011 and Nov. 8, 2011

Over a year ago. When did they actually start investigating the General.
