Ann Coulter Uninvited to Speak at Fordham
The Observer ^ | 11/09/12 | IAN MCKENNA

Posted on 11/13/2012 10:55:39 PM PST by publius1

On Nov. 10 at 12:46pm, Fordham President Joseph M. McShane, S.J., released a new statement regarding the College Republicans decision to cancel the Ann Coulter event scheduled for Nov. 29 in light of recent student reactions.

Below is the entirety of McShane’s message:

University Statement | Ann Coulter Appearance Cancelled

November 10, 2012Late yesterday, Fordham received word that the College Republicans, a student club at the University, has rescinded its lecture invitation to Ann Coulter.

Allow me to give credit where it is due: the leadership of the College Republicans acted quickly, took responsibility for their decisions, and expressed their regretssincerely and eloquently. Most gratifying, I believe, is that they framed their decision in light of Fordham’s mission and values. There can be no finer testament to the value of a Fordham education and the caliber of our students.

Yesterday I wrote that the College Republicans provided Fordham with a test of its character. They, the University community, and our extended Fordham family passed the test with flying colors, engaging in impassioned but overwhelmingly civil debate on politics, academic freedom, and freedom of speech.

We can all be proud of Fordham today, and I am proud to serve you.

Joseph M. McShane, S.J., President

“We have decided that it was in our best interest to cancel the event,” Theodore Conrad, Fordham College at Rose Hill ’14, said.

Conrad, president of College Republicans at Rose Hill, has announced that the club is canceling Ann Coulter’s scheduled appearance on Nov. 29 in the interest of the Fordham community.

Bullied is how it looks to me. Free speech is ok, if it agrees with our liberal point of view. Shame on the College Republicans for caving to pressure.

If only Ann were for sticking scissors in babies’ necks and sucking out the brains. Not only would any Jesuit campus in the country welcome her, they’d raise campaign funds for her.

It’s my take they were coerced into ‘making the right choice’.

If a speaker comes on campus and rails on the U. S. non-stop for two hours, it’s enlightened.

If a speaker comes on campus and explains the evils of Socialism, it darn near criminal behavior.

If this is the way universities want to run their show, fine. Cut all federal funding, and don’t give out student loans for kids to attend these schools.

We have all sorts of standards so businesses can stay open, and they damn well better meat requirements if they want to be licensed.

Then it comes to universities, and they can run 90% socialist indoctrination centers, and it’s supposed to be okay even if federal dollars pay for it.

Why do our president allow this? Why isn’t the RNC speaking out? Why aren’t our House and Senate members making a huge deal of this?

If universities want to be accredited, they need to have a program that is as near politically neutral as it can be. Otherwise, it’s the end for them.

Read the “Comments” attached to the formal announcement. Some are horrible; others are good. However, they give you an idea about the state of tolerance on a major university campus (sadly lacking and getting worse).

If they made a movie about the modern American university, it would be entitled “Night of the Living Dumb”.

My wife knew a lady on the staff of a local university. The lady invited my wife to a musical program, and to be nice, my wife agreed to attend.

We showed up to the hall where the program was going to take place, were greeted by the lady, and went in and picked out some nice seats.

Fifteen minutes later, this black group came on stage, and proceeded to play African native songs for about two hours. Folks, I’ve heard African groups sing. It’s actually inspiring and uplifted to see and hear. Picture that, and think 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

There was nothing remotely entertaining or enjoyable about the event. It was positively annoying.

During the whole program all I could think of, was the groups that make the college circuit rounds, making a living off doing things like this.

Not only do our kids get brainwashed, we actually have this circuit of Leftists making a handsome living off these university and college campuses.

What the hell is going on in this nation. I can see Leftist having a death wish for us, but where the hell are our advocates? Do we in fact have any?

Why we are losing the battle. Situations like this should be fought fang and claw.

Sooooo. If the students have a negative reaction to Calculus, will they cancel that, too?

Universities used to be the place for the provocation of thought, intellectual debate, and the advancement of knowledge.

Now they are parking places for over-credentialized knee-jerk Liberals on tenure, and rapidly becoming the eyesores of the intellectual landscape.

I think I'll offer to send the grands to trade schools instead.

I’d like to see a list of speakers they’ve had recently that were welcomed on campus.

What President of an FU College Republican group would not be familiar with Ann Coulter?

Really?

Canceling Ann is freedom of speech. How odd. Must be the College RINO Club.

They can probably still get Ali Mazrui.

“they damn well better meat requirements”

Given it’s so close to Thanksgiving, I recommend turkey.

They should name the group “Throw Up With People.”

I would like to see academia and the MSM locked in a knock down drag out lib war to see who can be the most leftist. Why even slightly pretend to be fair anymore.

The institutions of Media and Education, co-opted by the new Communist of America, are the death knell for the once great country.
Get use to it. It will never return to the America that I/we grew up in.
I pulled out, even before Obumbo was known outside of
Chicago slums.
I predict that it will get only worse.

Seems clear that it was not the Republican club that decided against Coulter but all the liberal screaming meemies who probably would have invaded the event and wrought havoc anyway.

Didn’t we go through this at Columbia? Oh, I forgot. Fordham is a Catholic university and all the students have been thoroughly indoctrinated at Sunday mass. And allowed to feel righteous about it.

How did everything get turned on its head like this? Ann’s books are some of the most moral books I have ever read.

Fr McShane, St Ignatius Loyola is ashamed of you.

I seem to recall - vaguely! - universities as being forums for the open and frank discussion of ideas. Fordham U, shame on you too.

Ann Coulter, feared by hundreds of thousands....just for what she might utter in a random moment of observations? I think Ben Franklin would be rolling around on the ground laughing so much that he might even wet his pants. A mere blonde lass...threatening an entire university with her simple words....drawn only from the English language (not even utter a word or two of French). The Fordham folks have much to fear, if they react in this manner...weak with conviction and courage...they lack what it takes to function in the real world. I would question what a degree means at Fordham or if it’s worth the paper it’s printed on.
