WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy sent U.S. jobless claims soaring by 78,000 in the week ended Nov. 10 to an 18-month high of 439,000, according to the latest government figures. A Labor Department official on Thursday said claims surged in the eastern parts of the country that laid in the path of the storm....

No electricity and a swamped coastal/beach area most certainly caused businesses to go down. Small businesses were ruined and others probably laid people off.
We can’t be so partisan that we’re illogical dfwgator. If had had a coastal restaurant that remained out of business by the storm, the smart business decision for me would be eventually to lay those people off. It’s that simple.
It is ALSO true that the election of Obama caused layoffs. BOTH probably impacted last week’s numbers.
You got that right. Bogus bullshit.
Not saying that people along the coast didn’t lose their jobs because of Sandy, but it is a minuscule amount that wouldn’t even come close to explaining the massive amount of new jobless claims.
True, but there's no need for them to lie any more. They won, they run nearly everything and we cannot stop them.
The plan is what it has been for a century: to collapse the system and then "remake" it, and they are now well on the way to carrying out the vision of the original Fabian socialists.
Americans voted on this fool. Enjoy it Idiots. Word is Ohio and Pennsylvania are hardest hit. Have fun.
I am beginning to think that the left has allowed themselves to be brainwashed that unemployment entitlement means they will finally have time for that government sponsored trip to the exotic location of their dreams.
They don’t want to work. They just want free stuff. They think they voted for a dream vacation- over a job at the morgue.
Boortz just said that most of the layoffs were in Ohio and PA, respectively. I don’t recall the storm affecting Ohio. Oh, and many of the layoffs were in the auto industry. How’s that bailout working for you auto workers in Ohio?
This crap is starting to get really insulting.
Seriously, how much to jobless jump with other storms like Katrina, and Ike, and so on.
It is crazy that the MSM pretends that obama is the first president to have to deal with a hurricane. Seems to me a storm would be “wash” for how much work it creates to clean it up.
You can really tell, that we are entering a dictatorship. They do not even try to create credible excuses.
You know, I bet 2000 hurricanes hit the USA since 1776. I really wonder if any administration ever tried to blame the horrible economy on any of them and expect us to believe it.
And Rasmussen will probably report how the Marxist’s job approval “jumps” to 60%! At least when the number is 425,000 next week they can claim the “job market continues its slow improvement.” I’ve never felt worse about my country.
Meanwhile the cleanup from Hurricane Barack is expected to last well into the next decade. It could be worse than the Fukushima cleanup.
Now that Obama is back in the White House...it’s ok to open the flood gates on the jobless claims figures...The hacks in the media do their job to get Obama re-elected.
Because of Sandy? I guess that’s why the biggest jump was for PA and OH. It all makes sense now...

What % of the new jobless are anywhere near the Northeast?
The storm caused it? They sure it wasn’t an anti-Islam video?
No it’s not the storms fault, it’s an anti-Muslim video on Youtubes fault.
