Henry Clay Cochrane traveled thousands of miles around the world as a Marine in the mid- to late 1800s. But it was probably one of his shortest military journeys early in his career that made him famous.

The Chester native earned the title of brigadier general after his Marine career ended. But his big moment in history came just as that career was starting. Cochrane was just 21 when he was one of 13 men selected to ride on a train from Washington, D.C., to Gettysburg with President Abraham Lincoln in November 1863. Cochrane was on hand when Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of Gettysburg National Cemetery. The battlefield is now one of the most famous and visited national parks and Civil War sites in the country.

Slightly misleading headline in that Cochrane didn't receive his star until after he retired. I post this article because I too was born in Chester and grew up in and near there (moving out of the area in 1985 before the city *really* began to deteriorate).

Looks like Chochrane’s old residence at 124 East 4th Street, Chester, PA is no longer there . looks like a parking lot next to the Chester Water Authority. Not even a whisper of a memorial. WTF?

Cool story, thanks. I’m an Upland baby myself, having been born in Crozer Hospital. We lived on Highland Avenue until I was 2 1/2, then moved to the suburbs.

I forgot to mention that I have visited Gettysburg five times, all in the last 30 years (I'm 51). Beautiful town. Beautiful college campus. Hallowed battlefield well worth visiting if you have the wherewithal.

On my last visit 18 months ago, I had a boutique brew at a pub (whose name escapes me) next to Lee's HQ. :)
