California Republicans say McCarthy endorsed gerrymandering that lost them 4 seats

“Kevin McCarthy was a staunch defender of these new lines, reassuring everyone that Republicans would fare just fine under them,” said Jon Fleischman of the Flash Report, the much-read online newsletter on California politics. “Clearly, this turned out not to be the case– although he was easily re-elected to the safe seat drawn for him. Had he drawn a competitive district, I wonder if he would have been so enthusiastic about the lines he helped stopped others from trying to stop.”

Senator Lieu from Torrance proposed a proposition for 2014 to triple vehicle registration fees. While I agree with the Republicans who blasted the idea, I think they should have considered just being silent and let him do it. Raising vehicle registration fees brought down Governor Davis, and in 2014 it would have been a juicy issue to attack Democrats and Governor Brown.

Yes there are a number of white voters here in CA who vote Democrat-—primarily gays, feminists, Jewish voters, union members. Without those subgroups, 90% instead of 60% of white voters would be voting GOP.

"Republicans” in Tallahassee gerrymandered Allen West out of congress.

No, they did not. This time around an "Independent Commission" is who drew the lines in Florida. He should have been able to win in that district he ran in...he overplayed the past intoxication issue with his opponent which may have backfired by the amount he focused on it.

The problem becomes how to convince them of the errors of their ways by means other than simply telling them they are wrong?

It was the job of the Legislature to re-district. They should have looked after their own....the Dems always did.

There are way more registered dems in St. Lucie County than republicans. Gerrymandering didn’t help West.

Real diificult for me to convince my fellow Californians how wrong they are:

Even though my wife is hispanic, I’m accused of being a racist because I am opposed to illegal immigration.

Even though I love to surf, I understand the necessity for oil exploration and drilling off of our coast.

Even though I have a child in public school and try to teach her about traditional values and history, I am up against the neo-Stalinist teachers unions and Marxist college professors.

And then you have to deal with the depravity of our pop culture, the capital of which is here in Southern CA.

The deck is really stacked against us!!! But I keep soldiering on. CA is not the only state screwed up around here. Obama still would have won the election without our electoral votes.

The effect of Prop 187 is exaggerated I think. Hispanics were already voting against the GOP in California. And the popularity of 187 at the time propelled Governor Wilson to a comeback win in his reelection campaign. That was the last signficant statewide race won by a Republican (Schwarzenegger doesn’t count).

I won’t deny that it exacerbated the GOP’s latino problem. The never-ending demagoguery of the measure no doubt made the existing pro-Democrat sentiments of Hispanics even stronger, and perhaps led to faster registration of many latinos than otherwise would have happened.

But that was all going to happen eventually. Mass immigration (legal and illegal) of mostly Mexicans was always going to favor the Democrats. All 187 might have done was speed up the GOP’s inevitable death in California.

We disagree ONLY at the margins. True, the hispanic vote in CA has ALWAYS been a Democrat voting bloc. Difference is this: After 187 passed, a sleeping giant awoke in the state and hispanic registered to vote in MASSIVE numbers. Also in CA, prior to 187, GOP candidates especially among popular Republicans like Ronald Reagan who actively courted their vote and campaigned in their neighborhoods, could win something like 30-35% in some cases upwards of 40% of the hispanic vote. Now days GOP statewide candidates normally win about 25% of the hispanic vote in CA.

That seems like a good analysis. I agree that the Hispanics pouring in from Mexico were always going to favor Democrats. They voted for the socialist party back home, no reason to expect they won’t do it here. A quarter or more of them are on public assistance, which means probably most Hispanic voters have a close friend or family dependent on government freebies. The arguments that we can win them back with immigration reform don’t fly with me either. We are never going to be able to out Santa Claus the Democrat party - on immigration or anything else. The GOP is going to need to try to reach people by offering big solutions. We need to be FOR something, not just against Democratic socialism.

Adding to my list of proposed Constitutional Amendments a ban on gerrymandering, replaced by a completely random mapping of CD’s to create the most geometrically uniform districts commensurate with evenly divided population.

There are approximately 3000+ organized counties or county equivalents in the US. Do you think we should have 3000 representatives in the House?

Yeah. If anything, we're under-represented. As for representation by counties, that's a straw dog. We do need less opportunity for gerrymandering. Smaller districts are needful. But still proportionate. Non-citizens should not count to pad the rolls for districting.

You can blame the Reynolds vs. Sims decision of 1964, a ruling that made it illegal for legislative districts to be constructed based on regions like counties instead of population, misapplying the “equal protection clause" (claiming the "one person, one vote" principle).

Our judicial oligarchs have spoken, and now we see the consequences of that decision.

No it was not. That was done by an independent commission - as I just said - the legislature did not gerrymander.

I know we are very frustrated with how this election went on many levels, but throwing facts to the wind isn’t going to help things.

So Mack in FL and Mack in CA go down; don’t guess they will need to file for unemployment. Can a congressman qualify for unemployment comp. if he is defeated?
