When Obama campaign aides surveyed the field of Republican presidential hopefuls early on, they saw a certain handsome Mormon candidate and thought he’d be trouble in a general election showdown. It wasn’t Mitt Romney. Jon Huntsman is the former Utah governor who took a moderate stance in a GOP field that leaned to the right. He didn’t get very far in the Republican nomination fight, but team Obama viewed him as a serious candidate who could pose real problems in a general election.

Any candidate was more formidable than Romney. There are very few candidates in presidential primary history who it was possible to make a 20-minute mini-movie about starring willing participants railing against him for ruining their lives with layoffs, pay cuts, outsourcing, etc. It doesn’t matter how conservative Mitt Romney was, no Republican with a brain in their head should have thought Romney could overcome the Bain baggage previewed by Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich in the primary, especially knowing it already killed Romney’s earlier campaign for Senate by gigantic proportions.
I agree, if you lost your last election, you should not be running for President.

The sheeple like Muslims better than Mormons. Can we locate a gay, Muslim, hispanic woman anchor baby to run in 2016? I think we would have all basis covered and get huge turnout.
Seriously, most of us know that Romney was the designated fall guy for Zero. Think of him as the candidate the affirmative action police would pick so as to not make it too difficult for our dear leader to “win” re-election.
You missed Gary Johnson's GOP bid. He was eventually the Libertarian party candidate.
