Orange County was once an instant synonym for Republican power, and the GOP's dominance looked impregnable. Now, battered by the recent election results and dismayed by the slow, steady decline in party registration, Republicans here are struggling to craft a new strategy.
The percentage of registered Republicans has eroded it now stands at 41% and the party has long since lost control of the political districts that envelop the county seat of Santa Ana, a Latino-dominated city of 330,000, and surrounding communities in the county's core.
This month's election brought more blows. For the second time, the once-red city of Irvine voted for Barack Obama over the Republican candidate. And a northwestern chunk of the county fell to the Democrats when GOP Assemblyman Chris Norby, an outspoken conservative, lost to Latina schoolteacher Sharon Quirk-Silva.
Asked to explain the loss, Scott Baugh, chairman of the county's Republican Party, attributed it to "not fully appreciating the demographic shift and not seeing it in time."

They should just quit and start a third party there.
We believe that foreign invaders have a right to your money Party
Illegal aliens ARE NOT immigrants. They are criminals who broke our laws as soon as they crossed the border.
So all the Mexicans are voting for democrats... And the genius solution offered by GOP strategists is to support amnesty which will bring in more Mexicans? Reagan tried this in 1986, which was when the demographic decline began.
Exactly
The Latinos, too, come to America for the “free stuff” the Democrat politicians gladly confiscate from Republicans to hand over to them in exchange for their votes. What’s that I hear? Another caravan of U-Hauls full of white people and their stuff heading out of town toward Texas?
lol
Stop letting the illegals vote and they are no longer a factor.
No, the “millstone” was giving in or ignoring these issues in the first place. From “affirmative action” to “goals” to “diversity” this is what has led to the current situation: elections which have increasingly decidedly racial splits. If the GOP had gotten 70%+ of the Anglo votes, it would have won in 1960 thru 2004. And once more get their fill of immigration, especially the illegal kind, and the economic and social disasters that will result, the percentage will increase. Sooner or later this is coming to a head. And all without the occurrence of another 911. If that happens, look out.
21st Century version: "Any opposition to the invading hordes of arrogant, pillaging people from all over the world is the last gasp of whites in the former United States of America."
Art Torres was the Chairman of California Democrat Party at the time he made observation.
Just do the numbers...At Parkland Hospital alone in Texas, illegals are dropping 1100 kids each month...Things are changing fast, everywhere, all sponsored by your government representatives... so....Be happy...Have a beer.
Why not start by responding with the “rule of law” stance ?
Over and over.
Are their opponents against the rule of law ?
Do their opponents support breaking the law ?
What if they get robbed ? Does the robbery victim support the rule of law ?
Just curious.
they’ll get to texas just in time to watch another former great state ceeded to the illegal invaders
So the solution is that republicans have to become democrats?
Just ONCE, I’d like an elected official to bring up the Rule of Law. My grandparents, like millions of others, emigrated to the US legally.
Of course, Democrats (and most Republicans) routinely trample on the Constitution. When you ignore the supreme law of the land, what’s a mere trifle like a federal statute?
Perhaps they’ll blithely ignore the Obamacare statutes, too.
I’ve got my great grandfather’s immigration paperwork saved to disc and on the computer.
The difference between right and wrong is NOT a matter of whose ox gets gored.
When is the treatment of American citizens in Mexico and their rights vs US treatment of Mexicans going to be an issue when we discuss amnesty ?
Ever hear of reciprocal aggrements ? These are arranged to protect the rights of American citizens working or living in other countries.
Why is it when it comes to citizens of other countries we are required to offer them the same privledges as we do to US citizens? But when it comes to US citizens who get in trouble or attempt to do business in other countries they do not get the same treatment their citizens get.
Americans cant own coast land in Mexico. And get no title to it elsewhere. If they run out of cash theyll get unceremoniously sent back or put in jail untill some relative comes up with the fresh. Thats just for starters as for granting them voting privledges yea lets give Mexican citizens that right when American citizens vote in their elections .
A millstone with illegal voters.

It’s over in California for the gringos (and the Republicans).
The scramblin’ and “strugglin’” they’re doing right now will amount to nuthin’.
Can’t they see that?
