Hindu-Americans Rank Top in Education, Income
The Voice Of American ^

Posted on 11/24/2012 12:20:22 AM PST by MBT ARJUN

Hindu-Americans have the highest socioeconomic levels among all religions in the United States, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life.

Experts say U.S. immigration policy is the main reason Hindus do so well.

Both the 1965 Immigration Act and the more recent H1-B visa program set the table for Hindus to succeed. The former encouraged the immigration of professionals, particularly doctors and engineers, while the latter was designed to encourage the immigration of highly skilled “guest workers.”

The number of H1-B visas issued to Indians grew steadily in the late 1990s and early 2000s and then spiked again in 2007. In 2011, according to the study, India accounted for more than half of all the H1-B visas granted. “The education capital of this group is phenomenal,” said Khyati Joshi, an associate professor at the Fairleigh Dickinson School of Education in Teaneck, New Jersey.

The Pew study, titled “Asian Americans: A Mosaic of Faiths,” bears that out, and the numbers are staggering.

Eighty-five percent of Hindu-Americans are college graduates, and 57 percent have some postgraduate education, which is nearly five times the national average.

Education levels largely correlate to income, and there as well, Hindus rank at the top of the list.

According to the study, 48 percent of Hindu-American households have an income of $100,000 or more, and 70 percent make at least $75,000.

Another, secondary driver for the success of Hindus can be traced back to India’s caste system, according to Prema Kurien, a professor of sociology and the director of the Asian/Asian American Studies Program at Syracuse University in New York.

“Hindu migrants to the U.S. are largely from upper caste backgrounds,” she said. “Upper castes have had a long history of socioeconomic and educational advantage in India.”

According to Alan Cooperman, the associate director for research for the study, the success of Hindus stems from the type of person that chooses to leave India and who the U.S. admits. This, he said, is quite different from other immigrant groups, where there are often high numbers of refugees or undocumented immigrants.

“This is the first time anybody has had good data on [Hindus],” said Cooperman. “Hindus are a fascinating group.”

I'm not disparaging them in any way. I'm just saying that Hinduism is not a religion with a large following in the United States prior to the immigration of Indians under H1B visas. (The occasional Beatle notwithstanding.) H1B visas are by definition reserved for highly technical skills.

Therefore, the population of Hindu-Americans are descendant from mainly well-educated immigrants, and of course will be higher earners.

Compare the entire population of Hindus in India to the entire population of Christians in America, and you will have a more reasonable comparison. Or compare only college-educated Christian Americans to Hindu-Americans.

I can tell you from personal experience that they think exactly like Obama. They see all the military activities of the United States post WWII as imperialistic. It doesn’t help that we fund Pakistan either. From watching their news, it seems their government is more corrupt than ours

“I never see a story where Crackers rank highest in anything accept racism.”

Understand that for every Hindu you meet in the US, there are 100,000 sleeping in their feces in India. As with other immigrant groups (including my own), we are importing the top of the heap.

“It appears American business and/or our government are intentionally trying to dominate the field with these people and to heck with locals.”

Absolutely; when a company sponsors an imported Asian coolie (from India, Red China, wherever), they can make them work all kinds of hours that no American would tolerate for those wages (and the coolie only tolerates until his indentured servitude is over - at which point the companies simply import more). Gill Gates, while questioning from one side of his mouth why American kids don’t go to school for computers anymore, fights with our government (under the threat of moving to Vancouver or India itself) to allow him to keep bringing more in (therefore driving down the salaries of the Americans left in the field even further).

There are a number of immigrants that we are importing, umm, not from the top of the heap. (Hint: their government is giving them directions on how to leave their home countries and sneak in here.)

Where I work as a minority white person, those that can vote, voted for Obama. Those that can’t vote, wish they could and they also favor Obama. They listen to the MSM and believe what they hear. Though at home they would still enjoy their caste system.

Make no mistake, we have quite a lot of Pakistani’s here on H1B as well and they are muslims. In the workforce at least on the surface they get along well with their Indian counterparts however, just like at home the Indians have their own caste system here in the workforce. Those in managment promote from ‘within’ their group.

They (both Indians and Pakistanis) believe the white person is inept and all they need from us is to learn english and understand the American ‘system’.

They may be ‘highly educated’ but usually to one field, coders code and can do nothing else for example. When they do need help they have a network of fellow Indians to assist them, many of them are employed through an Indian recruiting company and they are constantly on the phone having someone help them ‘walk-thru’ whatever task they need to accomplish that wasn’t included in their ‘higher’ education.

“There are a number of immigrants that we are importing, umm, not from the top of the heap.”

Absolutely; while the Asians are to replace our “Anglo” middle and upper classes, the Latinos are to replace our lower class. I guess the sentiment is that they will contribute more, and the racial grudge is removed (though it is simply replaced by a different one in some cases).

Indians here are usually high caste and dreadful snobs and climbers in the worst British kind of way. They should be natural republicans but if they get the idea that being liberal will advance them socially we’ve lost them.

In my job I deal with a lot of Indian’s. Hate to say but a lot of them I deal with, they are kind of condescending and rude. If I had it my way, I would cut off the H1-B program and encourage jobs to come back to the states and that would start with lifting regulatory burden off of hiring.

I agree it’s silly, but nonetheless the perception exists. I’m somewhat mystified by it, it makes no sense, but it’s there.
