GRAHAM, N.C. — In this southern mill town, tortillas and bolillos are as common as Carolina barbecue sandwiches. Spanish-language advertisements tout Latino-owned restaurants, garages, churches and used-tire lots, and banners lining the downtown streets proclaim, "Preserving our heritage — promoting our future."

But protesters who gathered downtown last month in Court Square, near the statue of a Confederate soldier, delivered a different message: "We Want Respect" and "Terry Johnson Stop Lying."

Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson's approach to fighting illegal immigration has raised tensions among Latinos in the community. A two-year investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, released in September, found that Johnson and his deputies had violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by engaging "in a pattern or practice of discriminatory policing against Latinos."

Federal officials recently canceled a federal-county immigration policing program, and the standoff is further dividing a community already split by the area's shifting demographics. Alamance County in 1990 had 736 Latinos, and whites made up 80% of the population. Latinos now number 17,000; whites have dropped to 66%.

Conservatives need to fight back against this. We allow the LA Times [MSM], the Justice Department and all anti-conservative forces to make us back down and capitulate when they put us on the defensive by defining us, our actions and our motives.

The Left works this angle state by state. We need to stop this and not shrink in the face of their lies about conservatism.

The very first thing illegals (no matter what race or nationality) do upon arriving is try and recreate the sh*thole that they fled. I'd have alot more respect if they tried to immigrate legally and assimilate into our culture instead of just transplantig theirs here.

I know it can be done because I work with those who have done it. It's one thing to celebrate your heritage. It's another thing to actively work agaist the heritage of your new host country.

Excellent post. The Regulators began the Revolutionary War, at the Battle of Alamance in 1771 years before the Declaration of Independence— this is true despite some historians trying to say it did not spark the later anti brit revolt (they are of course wrong if one understands that these were the rugged Scotch Irish and independence loving former brits, who fought indian-style presaging the later success in routing Cornwallis— and who were fighting being forced to support the king’s agents as they lined their pockets). Yes, they lost to Tryon’s colonial/militia/ brit army.... but that is where it began— not a damn tea party. Both instances had to do with taxation and freedom. The elimination of our culture and independence from tryannical government (requiring we give illegals citizenship and they have to do not a thing to get it)is central to this issue. Freedom being the most central to both times.

Quick question-— where do the 17K “latinos” WORK in Alamance county-— or do they even work there? Somebody in NC encouraged them to come. I recall a couple of business trips to Raleigh where I was shocked, being shown the mexican consulate office in the early am with a huge crowd of “latinos” waiting to get papers NC encouraged them to get so they could work there. Who was responsible for that?
My friend is from there and also told me that up in Durham the city actually accepts matriculos cards from the illegals as id and will let them drive with them!!! Yikes.

If Texas doesn’t successfully secede it will be part of Mexico within a decade. For that to happen Perry needs to be voted out and replaced with a true conservative who loves Texas more than himself. In other words, the exact opposite of Perry. Plus a conservative legislature would have to be elected and stop this “fix the gop from inside” crap.

With all that said, I have no idea how secession could be done.
