What a waste of tax money

Tribune reporters Jared S. Hopkins and Alex Richards recently exposed one of those head-scratching how-Illinois-works stories that will drive you crazy. This state is perpetually broke, yet it allows government employees to get paid for doing no work.
Between 2007 and September of this year, 2,033 state workers were placed on paid leave at various times, at a cost of more than $23 million. Employees placed on paid administrative leave are typically being investigated for alleged wrongdoing. Maybe an employee has been accused of stealing, mistreating someone or doing campaign work on state time. While the investigation drags on, the employee continues to collect a paycheck, oftentimes for months—and in some cases, years.
Nearly 70 of the workers identified by the Tribune collected paychecks for at least a year without doing a lick of work. One employee drew more than 1,100 days of paid leave. Did this set off any alarms in state government? No. "I didn't have to call in. The checks just kept coming in the mail," retired veterans affairs employee Christine Znaniecki told the reporters.

Illinois may be taking it’s cue from the New York City School System. The have any number of teachers who are “being investigated” who have to report to a building in Manhattan each day and do nothing. Some of them are of an age to retire, but don’t because it would be a cut in pay.
In the meantime.... my friend, who qualifies for unemployment, and still has funds owed her was just told “Sorry, the well has run dry.” No warning, just all of a sudden, no money put in her account. This, of course, happens juuuuusst after the election.
BTW, she’s a Romney voter.
And yet Mayor Ernst Rahm has the gall to pen an op-ed calling for Rebuilding America ... apparently through state fraud ...
they should be loaned to the Chicago agency or company that picks up the garbage, or that cleans the parks, or that sweeps the streets - etc., etc., etc.; and paid no more than such workers, with the balance of their regular salaries put in escrow until the investigation of them either finds them innocent and returns their escrowed earnings to them, or finds them guilty and gives the escrowed earnings back to the state treasury
What state??
This happens all the time where I live & work. We’ve got an employee that failed the training program. HR won’t fire them. Employees that have been caught abusing sick leave to the total of thousands of hours. Nope, can’t fire them. Even when all the proper paperwork has been completed. Your government, working against you.
