The dust hadn't even settled from the debacle of 2012 before we heard that the GOP would be warming up to the idea of immigration reform in an effort to make some inroads with Hispanic voters. Apparently we won't have to wait for the next Congress to be seated before we see some steps in that direction. Word has come out this weekend that House Republicans will introduce a revised version of the previously defeated STEM Jobs Act, which seeks to expand the pool of green cards available for families of well educated immigrant workers.
Republican leaders made it clear after the election that the party was ready to get serious about overhauling the nation's dysfunctional immigration system, a top priority for Hispanic communities. Taking up what is called the STEM Jobs Act during the lame-duck session could be seen as a first step in that direction…
Republicans are changing the formula this time by adding a provision long sought by some immigration advocates — expanding a program that allows the spouses and minor children of people with permanent residence, or green card, to wait in the United States for their own green cards to be granted.
There are some 80,000 of these family-based green cards allocated every year, but there are currently about 322,000 husbands, wives and children waiting in this category and on average people must wait more than two years to be reunited with their families. In that past that wait could be as long as six years.
The proposal involves issuing 55,000 green cards to family members of immigrants with doctoral and masters degrees in these high tech fields, and takes the additional step of allowing them to come to the country one year after they apply for a green card of their own. (The family members still wouldn’t be able to work until their own green cards are approved and received, though.) But still, since this is something both sides seem to want, we’ll finally see some bipartisan accomplishments instead of a do nothing Congress, right?
Not so fast.
But the legislation would still eliminate the Diversity Visa Lottery Program which gives out a similar 55,000 green cards a year to those from countries, including many in Africa, with traditionally low rates of immigration to the U.S. That prompted the House’s Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus to all come out against it in September.
The three caucuses said Republicans were trying to increase legal immigration for people they want by ending immigration for people they don’t want.
This was the same sticking point which sunk the bill last time, at least in part. And it seems like a rather awkward point to make a stand on now. We’re talking about 55,000 green cards which are already being given out anyway, and trying to shut down the program simply gives the Democrats cover to oppose an immigration reform bill which they primarily don’t like because the GOP came up with it. Further, it seems to send precisely the opposite message of the corrective movement the GOP is supposedly trying to execute.
The bill, even without the Diversity VISA Lottery attachment, expands immigration, demonstrates understanding of the need for immigrants to have their families with them, and still manages to focus the effort on the highly educated, skilled workers who can help boost economic growth and jobs. Why stick with a “balancing” measure which does nothing but feed ammunition to the opponent? I understand why we want bills spending X amount of money to be offset by X amount of savings. But this deals with the number of immigrants entering the country. I don’t think the formula holds here.

I know they can do better than this. I want them to push this place over the edge as soon as they can. Forget the drip drip drip of moving to the left, go pell mell for it: no debt ceilings, tax rates of 95%, completely free health care, 10 years of unemployment coverage, food stamps for all for 100 per day per person, go for it all I say.
Bankruptcy and the following anarchy will be a good healer. I little revolution every once in a while apparently is a good thing.
When the place goes over the edge, I wonder where the parasites will go next?
The government is rapidly finding out that it can get immigrants into the country on H1Bs, later process them for citizenship, and ingratiate them into the liberal way with all sorts of inducements.
Minorities in this country born here are a hard group to pander to. To compete with this, they’d have to set up a slew more of STEM focused HBCUs and MIs and support them heavily, give their graduates jobs, etc. HBCUs/MIs will be given even further preference in Government hiring in critically important STEM jobs, soley on the basis of their race and place of education.
Which is going to cost less in the long run? Which will input a more technically competent group into the work force? We’ve all seen the answer to this.
Soundas like more sweetheart deals going down in D.C. and we get sold down the river again.
Why are the Republicans doing this? It is part of the moral hazard that is killing the country.
Republican businessmen want cheap labor. Democrats want voters. Neither party bears the long-run cost since both parties strive to maximize profits/voting in the short run.
Therefore, politicians are unwilling to vote in the long run best interests of its citizens. They only maximize short run “profits” such as getting re-elected and hiring cheap labor (e.g. non-unions construction, food processing plants, etc)
Unfortunately, I’ve come to the abject realization that most all the Republican Senators and a lot of the multi-term Congressman are really nothing more than poweratti RINOs that so covet their power, even the power of second is too strong, and they could really give a crap what their constituents want.
My two Georgia Senators, Chambliss and Isakson are like this. Two more backstabbing, backsliding RINO Senators that only desire to keep their power and their status, even at the expense of the eventual downfall of this country. Chambliss recently signalled he’ll vote for increased taxes because he ‘loves this country too much to see it fall’...horseshit! He’s interested in keeping his status quo.
He and Isakson are on my list of Republicans to Primary next time they’re up.
Both parties are doing this because they have no sense of national purpose under a Republican form of government. They pander to the masses. I cannot recall the last vote that put the country first. In fact, one part of the legislature does not even vote for a budget because it would pin them down.
I never dreamed this place would fall apart as fast as it is going. Our only hope is to speed up the process and start over with the first proviso being anyone in office today is bared from office foreever.
Where’s the frackin’ balance? If we’re gonna allow 55k immigrants over and above our annual limit, we should be losing that many in return. Let’s start with our overcrowded prisons. When countries of origin take back the prisoners we have incarcerated and house them in cells in their homelands, we will all an accompanying number of green cards to replace them, in proportion to the world’s population.
That’s the virtue Bill Whittle is saying is missing from the GOP, and Congress in general.

How many of these illegals in prison are there in the USA? Is there an official count or estimate?
And how does this help illegal Hispanics who are mostly uneducated and unskilled?
Why don’t they think about citizens already here? If you want more STEM professionals, fix our schools. Make math and science the top educational priority. Stop teaching our children useless garbage like self-esteem and “Heather has Two Mommies”.
