A plan to dodge the ‘fiscal cliff’
WashPo ^

The writer, a Republican senator from Tennessee, is a member of the Senate Banking Committee.

In business I found that a challenging environment often produced our best opportunities. Perhaps that’s why I see the so-called “ fiscal cliff ” of year-end spending cuts and tax increases not as an impassable precipice but as our best opportunity to finally enact meaningful fiscal reform.

I hear Washington watchers and people in the hallways of Congress saying there is not enough time to get this done this year. I disagree. The hard part has already been done. Over the past two years, the options for reaching a $4 trillion deficit reduction deal have been drafted, charted, graphed, circulated, evaluated, dissected, leaked, reported, debated and then put on the shelf for another day.

Yep.

The GOP should do nothing at all. Let the Democrats have their end of the “Bush Tax Cuts”

This is like trying to “dodge the ground” when you jump off a cliff.

GO OVER THE CLIFF!!! We have nothing left to lose. Make the Dems OWN the mess they created.

The Republicans will cave on taxes, we’ll go over the cliff anyway, then Dems will say: “If we had raised taxes last year none of this would have happened.”

Make a pledge to not raise taxes. Then run up spending to levels beyond payback. Then tell us we just can’t meet our pledge. Why do we reelect these con men?

They’re going to do the equivalent of putting it on a seldom used credit card, then move without leaving a forwarding address.

Kind of funny that the media seem to forget that the “fiscal cliff” was a deal, now they clamor for another deal.

All a farce to decide who will get blamed by the voters.

Sickening.

>>>The GOP should do nothing at all. Let the Democrats have their end of the “Bush Tax Cuts”

How hard is this for people to understand? Seems rather simple to me. LET THE DEMS HAVE THEIR WAY!

Look, If we compromise the following will happen:

1) We will STILL collapse...but just a little delayed.

2) Because of the DNC/MSM spin machine and the ineptness of the GOP to put together a coherent argument...they will successfully hang the collapse around the necks of the GOP...because..."IF we had just followed THEIR plan...none of this would have happened." They've done that before and will do it again.

CALL THEIR BLUFF for crying out loud. Let them have their way in EVERY way...but go on record stating 1) Elections have consequences and this is what America wants...and 2) We think it will fail in the following ways for the following reasons and 3) The DNC/Obama will OWN these results.

We ALL know where we are headed. I would rather jump off a 30' cliff than a 200' cliff. And we ALL know when we do go off this cliff...the DNC/MSM will hang it around the necks of the GOP because we "held them back from doing what was necessary."

If the GOP doesn’t present an alternative to the public, then what difference will it make?

Dems will never agree to that plan as it gives a privatized option for medicare.

Plus Rs voting for any form of tax increases is a bad idea and unnecessary.

Yeah, that too.

The fix is FIXED, just have to play it out for the Peons until the very last minute of the last day, until then everything else is BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I REMEMBER "TARP", ever to well. Nothings changed, both parties now are the official "PANIC PARTY".

"If we don't do this or that, this or that will happen" FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER, the same MANTRA, both sides.

I say "let it happen", that sky is NOT going to fall. I never liked the movie "Independence Day", but it is looking might good right now. Blow it up and start all over.

Oh I agree. Part of what I would do is say "In order to avoid disaster, we must do X,Y and Z...that is out position. But the democrats will not do this...and so we are letting them have their way so the American People can, once and for all, see BIG GOVERNMENT does NOT work."

I guess I see it like this: We are at a precipice. For the sake of the future we MUST do something drastic. I honestly believe any compromise will only lead us to a slower demise...but not avoid it. So...to me...this is the perfect time to make the case for capitalism once and for all. Allow the other side to have their statist, socialistic solution since we stand on this precipice and it will be very clear, sooner rather than later, what works and what doesn't. There has been no better point in American History to prove our case.

It's funny, because back in college when I was transitioning from being a blue-dog democrat (raised by a pipefitter in a union when Texas was a blue state) to a right-winger...I had this very thought. The thought was that we could prove capitalism's merits once and for all by agreeing as a country to test each idea for 15 years. Commies...you go first....then after 15 years we will apply free market principles and fix your mistake.

We wouldn't need 15 years now...only 4.
