Chris Stamp, one of the original managers of The Who, has died of cancer at the age of 70.
Band member Roger Daltrey paid tribute to him on stage in Detroit on Saturday.
He described Stamp as a man "without whom we wouldn't be the band we were", according to Billboard magazine.
Stamp co-founded the group's Track Records label. He co-managed The Who with Kit Lambert and also helped to launch the career of Jimi Hendrix.
Daltrey told the audience at Joe Louis arena that Stamp "flew into the universe on a pair of rainbow wings".
"Chris, we can never thank you enough - well, I can't, for what you brought to my life," he said.
Stamp died on Saturday at Mount Sinai hospital in New York.
Born in London, he started out as a film-maker at Shepperton Film Studios, where he met Lambert.
In 1963, they decided to make a film about the British rock scene, when they met The Who - then known as High Numbers.
Daltrey referred to Stamp and Lambert as "the fifth and sixth members of The Who".
Stamp worked on the production for The Who's 1968 album Magic Bus and is also credited as executive producer of Who's Next, Quadrophenia and the soundtrack for Tommy.

Brother of actor Terence Stamp (General Zod, Billy Budd).
RIP.
Terence Stamp - my 1960s idol!
RIP Christopher Stamp.
RIP. Condolences to his brother, Terence.
Two Cocknies who made good.
May he rest in peace. The Who is my second-favorite rock band of all time (after The Beatles).
“The Who Sell Out” IMHO was the best album of the 60s.
it’s fair to say he won’t get fooled again...
Guess he didn’t die before he got old.

I’d juts turned 17 ...and my main impetus for going to the Woodstock festival ( bought tickets ) was to see The Who .
Would have been worth it just to see Pete almost decapitate Abbie Hoffman.
I grew up with the Who as my primary adolescent soundtrack. Weird coincidence that I’m presently reading Pete Townshend’s ‘Who Am I”, learning what a key role Chris and Kit held in the Who’s trajectory. R.I.P. Chris.
The movie “Woodstock” was playing on VH1 last week and I recorded it. Every time I see that movie I wonder what happened to the people who attended.
Posting on Free Republic probably puts you in a small minority of Woodstock Alum.

I was just about to become a senior in high school in August 1969 . I went for the music . Didn’t even toke on a spliff for the whole 3 days . My traveling buddy and I hitched rides from Storrs , CT to upstate NY and back ...Told our parents we had rides ...We lied .
Two giants, these brothers Christoper and Terrence. RIP.
My kids listen to the Who now.
Which means my grand kids are hearing them now.
Oh my!
I saw Pete and Roger about a month ago. Still a pretty darn good show for old guys. Loved how they integrated the A/V of Keith and John at key points in the show. It has been over 30 years since I saw them my first time, and I still didn’t see them early on, obviously.
