VTA light-rail extension to Los Gatos: $175 million for 200 new riders
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 11/28/2012 | Mike Rosenberg

Just how many new riders would jump on a train to one of Silicon Valley's most desired destinations?

About 200, it turns out -- and it would cost taxpayers up to $175 million to build the rail line to Los Gatos.

The new projections come from the Valley Transportation Authority's updated forecast for a long-envisioned light-rail extension. Still years from reality, the Los Gatos line would be one of the least-used light-rail extensions planned in the nation -- and would reduce South Bay vehicle traffic by a mere 0.01 percent.

Childress said park-and-ride lot expansions and other project elements could be dumped to help reduce the cost.

Our government, hard at work, assuring that any new train station that is built is impossible to use.

There's only one reason to extend the light rail as far as Netflix HQ - for Netfilx employees. Downtown Log Gatos is still a 60 minute walk away.

With a new bill of fiscal health, the VTA wants to connect a West Valley community that historically has been underserved by public transit to the rest of the county

"Underserved" by the light rail system is exactly the way I like it.

I’m sitting on a train that added a $350,000,000 leg for 500 riders.

Including operating costs, that’s a cool million dollars per rider.

PEOPLE REALLY LIKE THEIR CHOO CHOOS!!!!

mass transit = fraud

contractors want the money.

goverment wants the excuse to force reductions in peoples mobility. Trap people in the city gulags.

Suburbia means freedom.

Decentralizing means death to government.

Look at NYC, Wall street is just a museum. The real trading is on computers in NJ.

It is just cheepter to buy these 200 people a focus and insurance for 20 years.

Just give each of the riders a million dollars to buy a personal car and hire a personal driver. No unions. No DWI. No construction costs.

You’ll SAVE money in the long run and get at least 200 people to vote for you.

Organized labor = Organized crime.

They got to keep the operation running.

Some years back the graft in numerous major cities (Houston, Detroit, Cleveland, New Orleans) were under a Federal investigation into contract corruption.

The same names were listed as aides to numerous mayors. Each city played it like it was only a local story with no national implications and the national media didn’t give it any legs.

A few people may have been taken out but no mayor went to prison by my count.

What I note is the politicians’ constant need for euphemisms, whether required or not. This “light rail” is nothing more or less than... uhm, streetcars! Heck, why not call it Affirmative Action Rails, it would make as much sense.
