I suspect that if you are threatened in your own home by an active navy seal, a call to 911 may be wise.Yes - to tell them to send the meat wagon because you shot him while defending yourself...

A truism I learned here:
There are very few situations that can’t be made worse by the addition of a cop.

I hope more than a few learned a little today. Maybe, maybe not. Let me tell you how much worse....
Cop broke into my home at 2 in the morning. I heard the racket and got up. Started to grab my pistol off the gun cabinet but didn’t. Met cop in the middle of a dark hallway. Lucky, lucky....Funny thing was, well not funny if you were him, is he got shot by two young black guys not 6 weeks later during a “traffic stop”. Didn’t die. Went to court and the 2 kids were acquitted. Justifiable. That’s how crazy this SOB is. I say “is” cause they gave him a promotion to investigator. Go Figure.

I've been through similar hell. She's absolutely right. never talk to police under any circumstances unless you have a vulture on your side present. The entire legal system is designed to destroy anyone accused of a crime. They have lots of practice an an infinite amount of resources. We haven't had a 'justice' system in this country for a long, long time. It's a 'legal system', and you're better off if you don't forget it.

If there was information that I wanted to communicate, I would tell my lawyer in private and let him convey the information without unnecessary detail.
Others on this thread have linked to the videos explaining why you should NEVER talk to the police. I would summarize the most important point as follows: "Even if you are telling the absolute truth, if a credible witness mistakenly contradicts you regarding even a very immaterial fact, the contradiction might later convince a jury that you were lying and therefore guilty."

The suit was withdrawn eventually, although my husband lost an appointed position with the city. In this litigious society, Id recommend that everybody have an umbrella policy if your insurance company offers it.
Very good advice. Out Agent recommended 2 million as an umbrella. I think it is one of the best insurance policies available.

Nonetheless, there are times when you should be first. In a job I had a few years ago, I pepper sprayed a gentleman in the face (perhaps I should say OUR face as he was so close). I was able to get in my car & drive away. At the same time, an officer from a different district called me to discuss a different report I wanted to make. I first told him of my current incident, then finished providing the information he’d called me about. When all done, I called my boss. He told me to call the police. I eventually lost that job, in part, due to my failure to immediately call 911.

I did. I extricated myself from a dangerous situation without having to even produce a firearm. I assumed the guy got what was coming to him & left it at that. During the subsequent investigation by the insurance co., I told EXACTLY what happened. The guy I sprayed was a VERY good liar. They settled.
