In the first congressional hearing on Hurricane Sandy Thursday, lawmakers from storm-hit states made appeals for billions of dollars in additional aid and said massive, destructive storms are "the new normal."
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., testified at a hearing of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee that "the path towards enlightened protection and preparation" must include infrastructure improvements such as flood gate repairs in Stamford, steps to stop flooding along the Housatonic River, and the establishment of microgrids for electricity and increased use of generators, especially at facilities for the elderly.
"The sweep and depth of destruction in human impact and financial affect was simply staggering," Blumenthal said. "In Connecticut, disasters like Hurricane Sandy are quickly becoming the new normal."
Rep. Rush Holt, D-N.J., also said massive storms like Sandy are the "new normal," and called lawmakers who reject the idea of climate change "deluded."

Some Congressmen in the most affected areas of the East Coast where Hurricane Sandy hit are telling us they need $38 billion just to fix basic infrastructure so their constituants, almost all of them '1 percenters' (sea shore folks are all rich you know) can move back in.
At the same time the same Congressmen are telling us that due to Global Warming hurricanes like Sandy are the new normal and this is going to be happening again and again.
FUR SHUR ~ if these kinds of storms are going to show up all the time then any place that was damaged should not be replaced. Treat the Jersey Shore like a very large TIMES BEACH.
Save the money for your own district. We need some more interstate quality roads among other things.

This Holt is talking as if a sizeable hurricane never hit the Atlantic Coast in all of American history before. Just so typical of the 'Rat mentality: a denial of history and a willingness to accept any pseudoscientific theory without sufficient evidence for it, and concluding that they and only they are the "party of science" and that the opposition is "deluded."
Obviously, the major impetus of this whole "global warming" thing is to have some kind of reason to spend more and more federal money in his neck of the woods. How convenient that the recent hurricane is a perfect excuse!

I live over a thousand miles from the coast and I can't get financing if I want to build on the 100 year flood plane. Doesn't bother me one bit though. Some idiot with more money than sense wants an ocean view and sticks a million dollar home three feet above high tide on a sand bar sticking out into the Atlantic. Then he whines and cries about damage when a storm blows through.
The "billions of dollars in damage" that occurs during one of these annually reoccurring storms is directly tied to development where no development should ever be allowed. The area should not be supplied with utilities, paved roads, nor bridges. Anyone stupid enough and rich enough to pursue building in a flood prone area should have to sign off on no insurance/disaster aid or relief in the event of storm damage.
No government aid has ever been lavished upon the Midwest when we get harsh weather come winter. It's part of living here and we don't expect the rest of the country to come bail us out.

Holt’s dad was a conservative democrat Senator turned Republican.
Unfortunately he must have died before he taught Jr. right from wrong.
He never should have been elected or reelected. The famous “Twinkle twinkle Kenneth Starr” poem recited by the Republican incumbent convinced enough idiots that he was a flake so they elected Holt. He then edged a popular RINO ex-Congressman thanks to Gore’s coatails to win reelection.
His last close race was in 2010. His seat already rat leaning is now redrawn and safe, sadly.
He is the worst sort, a college professor.
In that 2000 race, Holt won not just because of Gore’s coattails, but because the Democrats got the administrators of old-age homes and mental hospitals to request absentee ballots for all of the patients and voted them straight Democrat.
Holt’s father was elected to the Senate at age 29, and had to wait until his 30th birthday (in June 1935) to be sworn in. So if Holt, Jr., who is only 64 years old, serves another 23 years in Congress (which he could do standing on his head, in that safely RAT district), he would be serving in the House of Representatives 100 years after his father began serving in the U.S. Senate. To show how impressive of a feat that would be, for State Senator Paul Thurmond (Strom’s youngest son, born when Strom was 73 years old) to achieve that, he would have to get elected to Congress (he lost the SC-01 run-off to Tim Scott in 2010) and serve until the end of 2054, when he would be 78 years old.
(Of course, I would rather have Paul Thurmond beat Lindsey Graham in the 2014 Senate primary and reclaim his father’s Senate seat; Paul Thurmond would be 38 then, and if he served in the Senate until he was age 98 (his dad served until he was 100), father and son would have served in the Senate, in the same seat, in 13 straight decades (1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s for Strom, 2010s, 2020s, 2030s, 2040, 2050s, 2060s and 2070s for Paul).)
Nothing against the Thurmonds, but I’d rather see someone like Rep. Tim Scott take out Graham (or any of the other House members). There’s also a rumor being floated that Herman Cain will challenge Saxby Chambliss and a Democrat polling firm (PPP) showed Cain leading.
The resurrection of this country back to what is normal is going to be a very painful, childbirth like experience for the disillusioned masses who have forgotten or never learned how to exercise critical thinking.
I would love for Tim Scott to challenge Graham in the GOP primary, since he’s the one guy that I think definitely would beat him. But I would be willing to wager that Scott will hold his powder and wait for 2016, when Jim DeMint will retire from the Senate.
As for the Herman Cain rumor, I hope it’s true, since not only would Cain make a far better senator than Chambliss, but hopefully it would keep that blowhard Erick Erickson from running for the nomination. If not Cain, then Karen Handel, or maybe Congressman Tom Price.

Cain for Chambliss would be nice. That would leave poor Newt in a bind, which corner to sit in.
