Eugene Robinson is one of the group-think columnists at the Washington Post. Like E.J. Dionne, he is an utterly predictable proponent of big government. So it wont surprise you to know that he wants taxes to go up and hes a big fan of Obamas class-warfare agenda.
Hes also a very partisan Democrat and wants the GOP to lose. Again, thats not exactly a stunning revelation.
So when someone like Eugene Robinson starts offering advice to the Republican Party about tax policy, a logical person instantly should be suspicious that hes actually trying to advance his own ideological and partisan agenda.
An obvious analogy would be me giving the Alabama coaches some advice as they prepare to play my beloved Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night (hey, Coach Saban, you should have your quarterback play like hes left-handed that surely will surprise the Georgia defense oh, and have your secondary and D-lineman trade places Im serious, that would be a brilliant strategy I only want whats best for you guys).
In this spirit, Mr. Robinson wants the GOP to abandon the no-tax-hike pledge.
were seeing the first signs in years that on the question of taxation one of the fundamental responsibilities of government the GOP may be starting to recover its senses. the anti-tax pledge never made a bit of sense. Grover Norquist has dangerously loopy ideas about the proper size and scope of government. Republicans who signed the pledge and who now find themselves in a box have only themselves to blame. They pretended it was possible to provide the services that Americans need and want without collecting sufficient revenue.
In other words, a columnist who wants bigger government and a stronger Democratic Party is telling Republicans to raise taxes.
And hes not alone. Some Democrats have openly admitted that their top political goal is suckering Republicans into a tax hike.
So if youre a Republican, there are two possible reactions to Robinsons column.
1. Gee, Eugene is a swell guy to offer this advice. He really cares about my best interests, so Im going to tell Grover to get lost and then Im going to vote to give my opponents more money so they can create more dependency and make it harder for me to win future elections! I bet Chris Matthews will praise me for being a statesman.
2. Hmmm, lets think about this. My opponent wants me to do X and I can see how doing X will be good from his perspective. Since my IQ is above room temperature, Im going to explore doing Y or Z instead.
For most of us, the answer is obvious. But, then again, theres a reason the GOP is known as the Stupid Party, which is why the modified cartoon in this post showing Charlie Brown, Lucy, and a football is so appropriate.
But thats not completely fair. Some Republican do the wrong thing with full knowledge and forethought. These are the politicians who perhaps came to Washington many years ago thinking it was a cesspool, but theyve since learned to work the system and now they think its a hot tub.
P.S. This post is based on real-world analysis. Yes, there are hypothetical scenarios where even I would agree to a tax hike, but theyre about as realistic as the possibility of me throwing five touchdown passes for the Bulldogs on Saturday (hey, I have still have four years of eligibility!).
P.S.S. Heres another example of a Washington Post columnist offering self-help suicide advice to the GOP.

When the economy go into the crapper, guess who the media will blame for the downturn? Republicans.
In fact, look for ads from the DNC: "The REPUBLICANS raised YOUR taxes, right when your family could have used that extra money to keep their small business going. Now you need to tell the REPUBLICANS to stop hurting the economy with their record breaking tax increases."
Please don't tell me that they do every time they buy a pack of smokes or a case of beer.
Eugene Robinson type: Taxes are necessary to pay for the fundamental responsibilities of government.
Freeper: Can you give me an example of a fundamental responsibility of government?
Eugene Robinson type: Taxation is one of the fundamental responsibilities of government.
perfect analysis
A violation of rights isn’t a “new right.”
RATS don’t get that.
Like Sandra Fluke’s demand for a “right to access” birth control paid for through force [taxes] by someone else.
You can have things, but other people aren’t paying.
freaking dummies..................
Robinson is a filthy, goosestepping racist. Give us a seig heil!, pig.
The left is always defining what conservatives and patriots are. It’s time for us to give labels to these putrid Nazis and commies in the rat party and its Goebbel’s propaganda press.
I’ll repeat it: Robinson is a goosestepping racist pig.
The worst part about it is that voting against tax increases as a Republican shouldn’t take much of an IQ. If a proposal comes up that would result in more money being transferred from the American people to the federal government, you should vote no. That’s it. If you can do that one thing as a Republican, you can do OK for yourself.
Eugene has some nice stuff. I want it. It’s only fair!
Going out of your way to tell voters that your no tax pledge means nothing to you is just stupid.
And as far as holding out for 'entitlement reform' goes, why would I trust Bohner, McConnell, Obama , Pelosi and Reid to screw with those? Look what they did with the Budget control Act. They passed a bill they called a historic big step forward reform that they now say is destructive.
"Group-think"? Is that what it is? I thought it was more like "group-grope".
They're trying to inoculate themselves and the GOP by uttering "provably" "reasonable" statements before all hell breaks loose. Because what is going to happen is,
Sound like fun? That's how we'll be spending Q1 2013.
Well if House Republicans don't extend those-middle class tax cuts in a passed House bill, and since Obama demanded income under $250K but now Buffet says it should be $500K so make it first $500K of income as 'middle class', and then send it to Senate and thn get on TV and declare the crisis over and the middle class saved, then Rs deserve EXACTLY what they get.
They look just like they did a year ago with FICA standoff, like holding the middle class hostage for the rich tax cuts, even if its something else they want. Obama used that theme to CRUSH Rs in the election. How stupid are Republicans anyway?
There is no helping a party that is so stupid that they keep walking into the same trap OVER and OVER.
BTW : The Republican House Bohner and Ryan passed those defense cuts, dont believe them when they lie and say they didnt.
Ahh... There's that false dichotomy again!
I knew it wouldn't take long to find the simple Robinson spewing that lie again. The rats think that if they repeat it often enough, normal, thinking people will somehow forget that it's actually about half the population - - the moochers - - who want more of "the services that Americans need and want", while it's the other half - - the working, taxpaying, traditional American families - - who supply the "sufficient revenue" to pay the freight for the moochers.
The collective IQ’s of the entire Republican leadership wouldn’t equal my hat size.
