Russias Vladimir Putin has declared war on the Internet, and not just within his countrys own borders. Putins war may be coming soon to a laptop or smart phone near you.
For years weve been told by Putins apologists that his moves against traditional media didnt matter because it was impossible to strangle Russias feisty Internet. But for a KGB dictator, impossible is a meaningless term. Putins campaign consists of a three-part pincer movement, and now that he has essentially been made president for life, he is pursuing it with greatly renewed vigor.
Throughout Putins first twelve years in power, his apologists told us we did not have to worry about his disturbing moves against newspapers and television, because the Internet was beyond his reach and would remain a bastion of criticism that would counterbalance state-controlled media. They said it was necessary to allow Putin strong-arm tactics because of the chaos he found in Russia. It was a faulty premise, because the majority of Russians lack Internet access and dont obtain information online. But now it is clear that the claim was nothing more than an illusion, because Putin is fully capable of shutting down adverse Internet reporting just like he did with the brick-and-mortar variety. Its clear now that the apologists were just looking to have Putins critics drop their guard, which many obligingly did.

barry said to his 'MENTOR', I'll be more flexible after the election.
Sure, it doesn’t, but you have to read through the article, not only a title.
All of a proposed measures are in action for a long time in most other nations, including good ole USA.
Feds has legal tools to both identidy bloggers or shutdown websites.
As for a treason quote, follow a link instead of picking it out of context. US has legal tools to prosecute such an activity as well.
And since when is the USA conservative by copying the KGB man?
I’ll have to post some stories about the Nashi next time they act up too. Thanks for reminding me.

United States and most other nations HAS such a legislation for a decade or more.
Noone is copying a KGB man, it is a KGB man who finally adopting that.
So then Putin is a leftist after all?
To name one a leftist you have to place a center mark somewhere, isn’t it?
He is certainly on the left of some politicians but it is huge a call one a leftist for adopting a legislation, similar to American legislation active under Republican administration.
Especially if your alleged leftist originated from a country which has a real communists taking part in elections.
I see you’re getting Republicans and conservatives mixed up too. Don’t feel bad; it still happens, but not for much longer.
Putin’s the enemy of the USA and helps all of the USA’s enemiesincluding Islamic terrorists. I don’t put too much stock in those who try to defend him.
I’m not defending him. And I’m not mixing Republicans and conservatives as well.
I’m just pointing that article doesn’t fit your image of Putin, factually.
It seems like you are busy with a scholasticism tournament.
Was Bush leftist too? He is surely a bit on the left from Reagan! (And I’m not equating Putin to Bush if you are about to start about it).
Yes, Bush was quite far left. Ask the other conservatives on here.
My “image of Putin factually” is not inaccurate. The fellow is an autocrat and an enemy of the USA that aids terrorists. The proverb about the leopard not changing its spots is unbreakable, because it is Holy Scripture (Jeremiah 13:23) and Scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35).
My old friend Eugene Kaspersky introduced the concept of an “internet driver’s license” a while ago. 180 from his old stances. Either his brain has mushified, or he’s part of the corporate robber baron club now.
