I bet the perps left very clear DNA evidence hither and yon, which will be a slam dunk if they are already in the system; and means that any future offense will nail them as well.
This was becoming such a pain to criminals a few years ago, that police noted repeat offenders were carrying bottles of chlorine bleach with them to splash on anything they might have left a unique (not mixed with other people’s) DNA on.
I once read a story in “Guns” magazine by Col. Charles Askins. He was a world champion pistol shot and was working for the Border Patrol.
One day while on patrol he spotted a canvas or some type of cloth covering what he suspected were illegal aliens. He approached them and suddenly someone in the canvas pointed a stick out of it.
Col. Askins thought it was a rifle barrel and instinctively pulled his pistol and fired. Fortunately for everyone he missed. It turned out to be a husband and wife, and not illegals.
Every time I hear someone recommending range time when a person misses a shot or shots in a stressful situation, I think of that trained Border Patrol Agent and world champion shooter.
That should narrow it down.
