~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: United States Army Soldier Systems Center, Natick, Massachusetts

The United States Army Soldier Systems Center (SSC) is a military research complex and installation in Natick, Massachusetts charged by the U.S. Department of Defense with the research and development (including fielding and sustainment) of food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems, and other service member support items for the U.S. military.

The installation includes facilities from all the military services, not just the Army, and is so configured to allow cross-service cooperation and collaboration both within the facility and with the many academic, industrial and governmental institutions in the Greater Boston Area.

The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center (SSC) is the Army’s one-stop Soldier-support organization. SSC is responsible for researching, developing, fielding, and managing food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems, and Soldier support items.

NSSC’s goal is simple: Provide America’s Soldiers with the best equipment in the world. To achieve this goal, the Natick team has consolidated full life-cycle management of Soldier items into a one-stop, Soldier support organization.

NSSC conducts research, development, acquisition and sustainment to maximize combat effectiveness and survivability of freedom's defenders.

Natick Labs has developed or is developing the following items or systems:

The MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat)
Irradiated food
The "instant chapel"
Bulletproof clothing
Land Warrior
Future Soldier
Future Force Warrior
Collective Protection Shelters
Interceptor Body Armor
Quarpel, a water-repellent, water and stain resistant textile treatment

In an effort to develop a warrior system to meet the Army's transformation goals for the Objective Force, the US Army Soldier Systems Center (Natick) was leading a new Army-wide research effort called Objective Force Warrior. The proposed concept for OFW would upgrade Land Warrior and enhance warfighter lethality and survivability by bringing many of the ideas of the Future Warrior concept to reality in the 2010-2012 timeframe.

The Museum of World War II, Inc., with 10,000 square feet of display area, is described by London’s Imperial War Museum as “a fully staffed private collection containing the most comprehensive display of original World War II artifacts on exhibit anywhere in the world”. The museum is located a few miles west of Boston, at the junction of two major highways.

Formed over a period of more than 40 years, the collection documents and illustrates the period from the Versailles Treaty, ending World War I, to the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials, ending World War II. All of the more than 6,000 artifacts on display, as well as 100 mannequins with complete uniforms and equipment, are original and from the Second World War.

The presentation of the exhibits is a major reason that the Museum is private and not open to the general public--although visits are regularly scheduled several days a week for those who will appreciate and understand the era and the collection. Most of the artifacts are not behind glass.

Open-Handed Help

December 4, 2012

A homeless man spends time in our local library. One afternoon, while I was writing there, I took a lunch break. After I finished the first half of a turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich, an image of the man’s face came to mind. A few minutes later, I offered him the untouched part of my lunch. He accepted.

This brief encounter made me realize that with all that God has given me, I needed to do more to help those who are less fortunate. Later, as I thought about this, I read Moses’ instructions on providing for the poor. He told the Israelites: Do not “shut your hand from your poor brother, but . . . open your hand wide to him” (Deut. 15:7-8). An open hand symbolizes the way God wanted His nation to provide for impoverished people—willingly and freely. No excuses, no holding back (v.9). God had given to them, and He wanted them to give generously enough to supply whatever was “sufficient” for the need (v.8).

When we offer open-handed help to the poor, God blesses us for our kindness (Ps. 41:1-3; Prov. 19:17). With His leading, consider how you might “extend your soul to the hungry” (Isa. 58:10) and freely give to help others in Jesus’ name.

Grant us, then, the grace for giving
With a spirit large and free,
That our life and all our living
We may consecrate to Thee. —Murray
You may give without loving, but you can’t love without giving.

Read: Deuteronomy 15:7-11

You shall open your hand wide to [the poor]. —Deuteronomy 15:8

Thanks, lauren, for today's Road Trip: U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center, Massachusetts

About 20 minutes ago we had a 5.8 earthquake centered about 30 miles west of Anchorage.
Really shook things up pretty good.

Until recently I lived close to the “Natick Labs” (which is what the facility's called by locals) and there's a young lieutenant who lived in my building who's assigned there. In the early 70’s I did a USAR summer camp at the Ft Devens hospital and while there we received a bird colonel from the labs whose experimental chute failed to open.I'll remember the image of the chopper's arrival ‘till the day I die.
