Dick Armey quits FreedomWorks

Former congressman Dick Armey has quit FreedomWorks, the conservative group he helped bring to national tea party prominence.

Armey confirms that he wrote a letter to FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe on Nov. 30, resigning from the group, as first reported by Mother Jones. He told the Post that he does not know who leaked his resignation letter.

“We accepted his letter of resignation and we wish him well,” FreedomWorks press secretary Jackie Bodnar said.

“As I resign from all board positions and duties, please see below a list of dispositions on outstanding issues: I expect to be fully compensated through the expiration date (December 31, 2012) of my current consulting contract with FreedomWorks,” he wrote. “Henceforth FreedomWorks shall be prohibited from using my name, image, or signature in any way or for any purpose without my written permission or in the event of my death, without my heirs written permission.”

Although that may all be standard legalese, that does not sound like a particularly friendly parting. I suppose we will hear more later on.

Is he resigning effective immediately, but demanding to be paid for the rest of his self created Christmas vacation?

It’s only a few weeks. Many people have that much vacation saved up by the end of the year.

I never did quite get what Armey's deal is. He quit Congress rather abruptly as well.

“I always liked Dick and what he had to say about “Barney F_gg.”

I didn’t like the way Armey dissed JD Hayworth and Newt. Armey’s establishment.

Might be interesting, eventually learning the source of contention that led to Armey’s departure. Used to regard him as an okay conservative back in the day, but when he became vocally pro-amnesty, I grew very wary of him. That’s the reason I kept my distance from FreedomWorks, quite frankly. Plus, when the tea party movement started, he did come across rather presumptiously like a guy who ran out in front of an ongoing parade and immediately proclaimed himself the “big leader,” as if he were some kind of populist outsider. Which considering his background was hard to buy, to put it mildly.

Sounds like the joint was infiltrated. Thus, the resignation. Who would speed release a personal resignation letter, for whom one should retain some right to privacy in personnel matters, such as conditions of hiring and firing and resigning. This seems to have from the post office to the hands of the Washington Post?

Wow. Barrier breaking speed there. I’d be burned about that, but lately I’m burned most of the time with the stupid party politics in general.

>> I never did quite get what Armey’s deal is <<

Seems to be a really sleazy character, going back at least to the time about 15 years ago when he was spreading scurrilous rumors about the tragic suicide of Brit Hume’s son. There also seems to have been very bad blood between Armey and Tom Delay.

Yes, somewhere, Armey got a burr and became crossways with most everyone, at one time or another, on our side. I don’t quite know what the deal was, but he was sidelined for some reason.

“Hope you also had a problem with his trashing of Gov Palin”

I wasn’t aware of that but it sounds typical. I’ll add it to my list of Armey misdeeds.

He has been in line to succeed to The Speakership when Gingrich stepped down, but Armey lost out because he had made so many enemies in the GOP. Doesn’t really seem to be ideological issues so much as personality clashes.

I think the tea party is more effective when it doesn’t have “leaders”. No one in particular for the MSM to attack. When they attacked us as a group, it didn’t stick. When they attack these so-called tea party leader groups (e.g. tea party patriots and tea party express) the MSM got more traction. Also, I remember a lot of the conservative middle and conservative Reagan democrats participating in tea party rallies.

Yes, thanks. I believe too that personality differences superceded ideological differences. I loved Newt back then, and afterward on many issues. Sorry to see him occasionally try out the make-nice outreaches withe Lefties.
