Change on veterans’ gun rights lights fire
Washington Times ^ | 12/03/12 | David Sherfinski

A major defense-spending bill hit an unexpected bump on its journey through the U.S. Senate over an amendment on veterans’ gun rights[.] Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, wants veterans who have been deemed “mentally incompetent” to have their cases adjudicated by a judge — rather than the Department of Veterans Affairs, as happens currently — and argued that veterans who simply cannot support themselves financially are needlessly given the label and, as such, cannot buy or possess firearms.

The bigger question is why people in Congress think that Veterans forfeited their rights to due process by joining the military.

I feel this exposes the Democrats as the leftist gun-grabbers they truly are.

The Left constantly demonizes gun owners as unstable and ill-suited to ownership of military-style firearms like AKs and ARs. Yet here they are demonizing the very people to who they consistently point as “properly trained” to use those weapons.

So if these “trained” veterans are deemed mentally unfit to have a firearm, then they could deem any American mentally unfit to own any firearm, regardless of utility in a war zone.

This is a trial balloon to define who may own guns. If veterans are to be deemed unstable as a whole, then this will be broadened without prejudice. Guns will then be denied on race, creed, and color. These items are on the DD forms when purchasing a firearm along w military service.

Because it is a Constitutional individual right, to remove it takes the due process of a US Judge in a courtroom, not some bureaucratic administrator in a veterans' hospital.

Do we remember: Constitution? Bill of Rights? Second Amendment? (Go read it) (Progressives hate it.)

So a guy with a service connected disibility such as PTSD
who fought for the constitution is now unable to practice those rights? Fits right in with the O-Hole’s agenda;

I am honestly torn about this.

There are a lot of men and women coming home from the war that have PTSD, and need serious help. Some of these people present a danger to themselves and others, and there needs to be a way to flag them as potentially dangerous.

However, that is also a mechanism that can an will be abused. There are vets that I know who need help, but don’t want to get any because of the fear of losing their guns.

I think they are going the wrong way on this issue, first Republicans should embrace this issue and then amend it as follows to include ANY Public Employee or Public Servant that can be demonstrated to have made Deliberate False Statements about ANY Material Fact in their Official Capacity.

This would immediately DISARM EVERY POLICE OFFICER State and Federal in the Country as well as every Politician and their families and Friends. And lets not forget the Scumbag Judges .

Oh, please! Next thing you know, extremists like you will want veterans to be able to vote.

Or at least have their votes counted...

When I was in I heard this a few times: "You're defending the Constitution, that doesn't mean it applies to you."
I.E. joining the Army is signing away your Rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

This is an end run of the grabbers to start the process of disarming Amerika. Sooner or later, once they get some of the policies in place, they will start deeming everyone to be mentally incompetent in some manner. The sheeple will be forced to turn over their weaponry under penalty of law.

So you feel assured they WILL turn them in, huh? I do not believe it. The people know the Second Amendment is the law of the land.

The sheeple, not the sheep dogs. There will be guns behind every blade of grass. No I’m fairly certain that not everyone WILL turn them in.
