Words have meaning; and the meaning here, has the consequences that you urge: Leaving people to live in fear & terror at being unable to adequately defend themselves against a sea of criminality in urban America.

NBC ought to fire Costa--not because his stated opinion represented an hysterical reaction that defies the logic inherent in reality;--but because it was totally inappropriate for him to use a platform, at a widely viewed sporting telecast, to indulge his personal need to exploit a sad event in this manner.

I think a gun can help someone defend him/herself, but only if he/she is trained in its use and has the resolve to use it.

I shudder to think how often someone thinks he is safe just because he has a gun and gets himself into trouble that would better have been avoided.

Still, if being attacked, I'd rather have a gun I don't know how to use than nothing.
