If Kasandra Perkins Only Had A Gun, Bob Costas ...
IBD EDITORIALS ^ | December 4, 2012

Gun Control: If the girlfriend of the football linebacker killed in a murder-suicide had a gun to defend herself, she might be alive today to explain how guns save lives and more of them means less crime.

Let us start with the proposition that Jovan Belcher, the 6-foot-2-inch, 228-pound Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, did not need his legally obtained and registered gun to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins.

He could have used his bare hands to dispatch his partner, or even, say, a knife, as was used in another murder case involving a famous football player that NBC Sports announcer Bob Costas might be familiar with. Just ask Nicole Brown Simpson.

Yet there was Costas using his "Sunday Night Football" forum to exploit the tragedy of their deaths to editorialize on the need for gun control. With "God Bless America" playing in the background, Costas took advantage of his captive halftime audience and repeated the unknowable claim of Kansas City-based writer Jason Whitlock that if "Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Belcher, a player in a sport known for head injuries, concussions and brain trauma, didn't need a gun to kill his girlfriend or himself afterward. If he didn't have a gun, he could have killed her anyway and ended his own life by any number of means. It added drama to kill himself in front of his coach, but the gun did not cause the crime.

"Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it," Costas quoted Whitlock as writing, setting some sort of record for falsehoods crammed into a single sentence.

I’ll bet as the days go on he’ll regret saying that. But then, maybe not.

Once the murdered woman’s relatives get a lawyer....it’s the NFL who has to worry, not gun owners. I suspect that the concussion and mental damage will be brought up...with the pain-killers and booze. It’ll bring the NFL one step closer to termination.

No. If she had a gun and the training, the shooting still took place in a “gun free zone”.

There are reports that Belcher shot a woman half his size 9 times. Clearly, he was pissed off about something. Someone that angry doesn’t need a gun to kill someone.

This is anecdotal but its my guess that a high percent of NFL fans are gun owners. So, the degree of Costas’ regret will be proportionate to his comments effect on His ratings - which I hope “goes off the cliff” to use an overworked term :)

I think he will be pounded big time by the fans. He never waited until the full story came in, just shot from the hip as they say. He will regret what he said no matter how much he does that “whoops, my bad” follow on.

First of all the PERP was known to have had domestic violence cases against him but the NFL quashed them

THE NFL IS RESPONSIBLE, so now, like all stupid public schools, they are going to blame the guns.

Second, indeed, liberals are so much about domestic violence, but now it is guns... ah! Where is the NOW on this? Getting deep throated again by Clinton and black football players because that is OK?

This guy was not allowed to have a gun since he had a past record of domestic violence. This is proof that gun laws do not work.

Sure, I'm for banning guns to deter murders. All the anti-gunners have to do to convince me is prove bad people will obey all the anti-gun laws and never obtain a firearm. (snicker) In short, they'll have to guarantee nobody will ever want to murder another human being ever again.

But even banning guns would not stop murders like this one. Men will always have a physical advantage on average over women. There are a lot of other ways to murder people. The reality is that too few of the people who need guns, like the woman Belcher murdered, have them. If more women were armed, there'd be a lot less of them murdered or assaulted.
