Skip to comments.Bob Costas calls Jovan Belcher commentary “a mistake”

Bob Costas said he made a mistake, violating his own rule of not trying to compress a nuanced topic into small bit of air time, with his controversial halftime commentary Sunday night on the murder-suicide committed by Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs the day before.
My mistake is I left it open for too much miscommunication, Costas said in a lengthy interview on The Dan Patrick Show. The 90-second weekly spot, he said, doesnt offer enough time in which to adequately discuss the issue of the football culture, the gun culture, domestic violence.

The PR reports must’ve arrived
It’s always a “mistake” with these guys, after their broadcast goes around the world eight friggin’ times.
If he had 90 minutes or 90 hours - I still think we would know where he stood on the 2nd Amendment....nuance my left foot.....
Wear something pink next time Bobby. Wear something pink. Then those watching at home will understand where you’re coming from.
And I’ve got an idea: let’s make Costas live-broadcast Olympic shooting events.
if I ever meet Costas, I’ll need bail money
Bob Costas reminds me more and more of Bryant Gumbel. Used to be a good sports announcer before he decided to be “relevant.”
Miscommunication my ass ...
Dumbass tried to capitalize on the emotion of the moment without thinking about the commentary that he was quoting ...
If he had, he woulda seen that the opinion that he was quoting was extremely flawed - and it is the actions of people that kill people, not the 2nd Amendment ...
No problem, Bob. Now I know your true colors.
Yeah, it was a mistake. Kind of like your career.
"It was a mistake to say this stuff in a sports broadcast when I could have pushed the same B.S. for several minutes, and to a more receptive audience, by going on 'The View' or 'The Daily Show'."
It was your typical marxist haranguing monologue. They don’t want dialogue with different viewpoints or to debate the issues.
The whole disgraceful episode gave me flashbacks to the kenyans last press conference. I was misunderstood is not good enough, Bob.
Maybe he got Zumbo’d.
Turns out sports guys are gun guys.
Costas must have read today’s negative stories regarding Belcher. Here’s a basic journalistic lesson, Bob: get all the facts before you go shooting off your mouth.

Hey, dipshit, how about just taking 5seconds to condemn murder instead of the 90 second sniveling attack of the 2nd Amendment?
When is Peter King going to apologize? And will his apology be a childish facsimile of a haiku?
Costas should be fired....out of a cannon....into the ocean....wrapped in chains.....
I don’t think that most gun murders in this country are committed with semi-automatic weapon.
Also, Costas is asking why would anyone “need” certain weapons. My guess is Costas has many things that he doesn’t “need.”
He doesn't have any idea?
Almost a Social Scientist...
Old Perry Mason trick....
>>>>> used to beat his wife”
“The jury will disregard that last remark” .. Judge...
Like they say You can’t unring a bell or put the fizz back in the Alka-seltzer
Again, not my words and I don’t recall the source:
If guns kill people then;
Pencils misspell words
cars make people drive drunk
& spoons made Rosie O’Donnell fat!
Mr. Costas, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Bob Costas is going on Bill O’ Reilly tomorrow night to “explain” his comments
I never want to see “Commie Costas” on TV ever again. I will actively boycott anyone who sponsors his sorry red @ss.
The NFL owns this amd needs to be told so.....email them:

Liar. He is getting smacked and now he gives the liberal apology required to cover his lying tail. I sent the NFL an email that I would not watch another game till Costas is gone. That may only be one man. But, at some point you have to say enough is stinking enough with these slime balls.
Heres where I stand: ...Access to guns is too easy in some cases. I dont see any reason a citizen should be able to arm himself in some states in ways only police or military should to have a virtual militia [by] mail order or gun shows. Why do you need a semi-automatic weapon? What possible use is there?
Whitlock wrote about a gun culture. Thats what I was focusing on.
Part of the culture is the proliferation of weapons, he said. There are those who believe that denying a semi automatic weapon or an assault rifle is the first step down a slippery slope in denying an old lady a gun for her own protection, Costas said. There are people who honestly believe that in Aurora [Colo.] if only a dozen or so people there to watch the Batman movie had been packin, they would have been able to take down the nut job in full body armor with military-type guns.
OK Bob --- doesn't sound like you backed down too much!
I loved the part where Costas said he “underestimated” his audience. In other words, he was surprised so many ignorant, gun owning racist rednecks would object to his attacks on them. Typical left-wing elitist, despite the fact that he makes his living sucking up to professional athletes.
O’Reilley will help Costas make excuses, since O’Reilley is also anti-gun. He’ll start ranting about “bazookas” again, while pretending to support the 2nd Amendment.
You're just another gilded whøre, tho lacking the integrity of most working girls . . .
Fire Bob Costas.... simple enough
Sent emails to all 3. FIRE BOB COSTAS!
I bet it doesn’t bother him one bit that his bodyguard carries.... It’s OK for him, but not for us.
Wish someone in the Sports Media would mention that if gays would stop using their “guns” inappropriately, a lot of them would still be alive and those alive would live longer.
Costas said blacks shouldn’t be allowed to have guns.
Costas and NBC are in damage control mode. All hands to the pumps.
Keep the pressure on. No mercy. Ridicule, comment, Twitter, Facebook ... until he’s GONE.
This was no mistake.
It was not a spur of the moment, unrehearsed rant either.
Watch the video—he’s reading something, as in a prepared cue card.
And then voila, the next day, it is THE talk of the day, on every network.Everywhere. Some idiot sport commentator’s “rant” on guns. Riiiiight.
Can you say “planned faux media event”? I knew you could.
