United 787 Loses Speed and Lands Early

A new Boeing 787 Dreamliner flown by United Airlines was diverted in midflight to New Orleans on Tuesday because of concern about a possible mechanical problem.

The plane was headed to Newark from Houston when it descended over a 10-minute span to 31,000 feet from 41,000 feet and slowed to 480 miles an hour from 655, according to FlightAware.com, a data provider.

The plane, which carried 174 passengers and 10 crew members, then rapidly recovered its speed and turned sharply to the south over Mississippi, according to the Web site’s flight log.

After the incident, United, the first North American carrier to fly the new planes, was examining one of the jet’s generators, units that provide electrical power to the plane’s engines, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Sounds hairy. Do the Dreamliners regularly fly at 41? I remember riding on one of the original 727’s on a demo flight in 1964, and they took it up to 40, but throughout the service of that model, through the stretch and QC’s, they rarely flew over 36 or 38. Control surfaces start to get mighty thin, mighty fast, way up past the sweet spot. Starts taking a lot more fuel, too.

I wouldn’t think plastic would give much protection, even in a “minor” crash.

The figure that struck me was 655mph.My understanding is that commercial aircraft seldom exceed 525mph.I certainly could be wrong or the 655 is a misprint.

Pilots no longer fly, they are flight systems managers. A “seat of the pants” pilot would have overridden the changes and flown the plane.

A pilot once told me he liked flying the 727’s since it was less computer automated. I think it required a 3rd crewman as the flight navigator.

And while all this was happening, what was the crew doing; playing canasta? Or were they maybe playing a friendly game of grab-ass with the flight attendants?!

Sounds hairy.

Hairy is picking up fingertips in glove tips and putting them in black garbage bags.

Hairy is large smoking holes.

Landing safely is not hairy. It's good.

Former Air Force and Navy pilots should be given top preference for being pilots of commercial aircraft IMHO. Unless this criteria is already in place?

What is the cruise speed of a Boeing 787?

Answer:
Mach 0.89 Which is also 677 MPH

Actually it’s cruise speed was originally supposed to be Mach 0.89 as the 7E7, as the 787 it is Mach 0.85. Basically 5% faster then the 767 and most airliners, and 20% less fuel burn. Other interesting points are it is composite, which gives some great benefits for passengers.

It’s way easier on your ears as it can pressurize 60% higher, much better when you have a cold or sensitive ear canals.

One of the other stress’s of today’s jet traveler, all the air is humidified so much less dehydration. Other metal aircraft don’t do this.

Turbulence is minimized by a state of the art turbulence mitigation system.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one!

Third crewmember was the flight engineer.

I have no doubt that they were clicking through menus the whole time.

My opinion too...But the guys that “really” flew and lived...Have no interest..I could write a book about them...

Composite materials today are quite strong. Formula car tubs are made from them and they provide good crash protection.
