Linebackers don't need guns to kill

Populists have been lining up these past few days to get on TV and denounce The Gun.

The Gun.

If only Jovan Belcher, the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker, didn't have a gun, everything would have been all right. Really?

According to one report I read, Belcher shot his girlfriend nine times. He then raced his Bentley over to Arrowhead Stadium and apparently shot himself only once.

Nine times. I am loath to wander in the fields of psychiatry, but it seems reasonable to assume that a guy who shoots his girlfriend nine times had an anger problem that had exploded into rage. I am not trying to be facetious or disrespectful to the poor woman who was murdered, Kasandra Perkins, 22, the mother of the couple's child.

Nine times.

What does a gun have to do with that kind of anger?

I appreciate articles like this but we on the pro-gun rights side have to raise other arguments too. Just saying that a killer could kill his victim with a knife or his bare hands isn’t a winning argument. We need to focus on the fact that there are a lot of vulnerable, physically weak people — the elderly, women — who are able to protect themselves with guns every year from linebacker-sized thugs who otherwise would beat, rape and/or kill them.

“but it seems reasonable to assume that a guy who shoots his girlfriend nine times had an anger problem that had exploded “

Exactly, and if he didn’t have a gun he’d have used a knife, or a baseball bat, or a candlestick, his vehicle, or his hands.
People that are going to go off tend to do so regardless of what item they might use as a weapon is present or not present.

I must be out of synch with the rest of the country but I don't understand why a football player gets this much more attention than any other weakling out there who abuses/murders those around him. He wasn't notable except for his ability to play a game. The rest of us do something productive for a living.

Am I missing something here?

For many of us a gun would be the only chance we have to survive an attack by an NFL linebacker.

Exactly.
If he forearm blocked you while running full tilt, that itself would do damage.

It's all about the evil gun, football was also the victim of gun violence here.
Pay no attemtion to the three victims being portrayed in the MSM, the victims are,
a girlfriend, a football player, and football the game. The gun forced it to happen.

I'm betting that the gun was driven around by it's friend, the SUV.

How true, anyone with average or better strength and/or skill can easily kill or maim with their hands.

We taught in self-defense and weapon retention that if an assailant attacks from within 10-15 with hands, edged or blunt weapon you are wasting your time trying to bring a firearm to bear (especially from a holster or concealed) you had better brace for impact and use you hands and try to neutralized them and once you are in control or subject has been moved out of your personal zone then draw your weapon.

In a close clinch a weapon can be drawn and used but the risk is high it could be used on you.

And still no mention of African-American culture, (black culture)?

And that money making mix of Hollywood, black culture and violence?

Add in government handouts, illicit pharmaceuticals, fatherless families... A strange brew for death.

You kind of beat me to it.

I just came here to say that Kasandra Perkins’ only chance to survive a life and death encounter with Jovan Belcher would have been, ironically enough, to be armed with a gun herself. Even a tiny woman can pull a trigger. Belcher was a big, big man but a single bullet is all it takes to put a big, big man in the ground(Belcher proved that very fact with his last act.) Like the old saying goes: “God created man, But Samuel Colt made them equal.”

Actually a skilled martial artist can disarm you if you are drawing a holstered gun from 20 feet. That same martial artist can take your gun from 3 feet even if it is pointed directly at him/her.

Actually a skilled martial artist can disarm you if you are drawing a holstered gun from 20 feet.

Not as demonstrated in one of the defensive handgun courses I've taken over the years. We tested the 21' rule. When the holstered good guy detected movement of the perp toward him (running), he drew and tried to fire TWO controlled shots on target (not against the runner but a silhouette in front of the shooter). Most students were able to hit the target once, with a second shot straying off target. A few got off respectable double taps.

For a martial artist to "disarm" he must, at the very least, deflect the weapon before it dumps a round in him. This assumes the weapon will be presented to him, but defensive HG courses through TacTrain (AZ) teach the close ready with bore on target immediately after clearing leather. From this position accurate shots at near targets are quite effective, if need be.

As I recall there were 6-8 people in this "Street Survival" course. Not every CCW holder's performance will be as good. The untrained individual will have difficulty against the trained assailant who has the initiative. (So, what you are saying may be true for some but not all.) The trained pistolero will also be essentially dead meat if caught unawares. That is why we endeavor to remain 100% of the time in Cooper's condition yellow (alert), not white (oblivious).

Here in AZ we can now display the weapon, when presented with a potential threat (ARS 13-421). We don't have to wait to be attacked, further guaranteeing your MA reduced chances of success.

Had she had a gun we would have Costas rant and been reading articles about how the NFL has lost a future great because of GUNS.

If only Belcher hadn’t owned a gun, we could be pimping the usual Sunday afternoon violence fest while making millions off the NFL Coliseum bread and circus show, without having to feel guilty about going on with the show on the heels of a massive tragedy. We wouldn’t have to trot out pint-sized mouth to give us some cover for honoring money over humanity. Meanwhile, count the guns in the stadium during the game, especially those guns devoted to protecting costas.
