Californians buying guns at record rate
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ^ | 12/5/2012 | CLAUDIA KOERNER

Posted on 12/05/2012 2:04:15 PM PST by dragnet2

Californians are buying more guns than ever.

As of November, the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System had run 981,798 background checks related to guns in California, beating out totals for previous years before 2012 is even over. The numbers jumped about 8 percent from last year, part of a steady increase since 2008.

This year, however, the system broke records, with 154,873 calls on Nov. 23, up about 20 percent from Black Friday last year. With the high volume of calls, officials shut down call centers briefly to allow the system to catch up, Fischer said.

Among California gun buyers, the spike was even more pronounced.

Across all levels of government, officials have made moves to regulate gun ownership, he added. While the most restrictive regulations would likely be overturned by courts under the Second Amendment's right to bear arms, Eastman said a risk of control was enough to encourage prospective gun owners to buy while they can.

Outside of political strife, economic uncertainty has also inspired people to look for more protection, he said. Violent crimes have steadily declined in recent years, according to FBI statistics, but Eastman said concerns remain that those in desperate financial straits could be a threat to safety. With talk among politicians about cutting social benefits, financial hardships could become worse for many, creating an even more volatile situation, he said. Concerns are also high about preparedness in case of disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy.

"It's like a perfect storm," he said.

Charlie Blek, president of the Orange County chapter of advocacy group the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence "The National Rifle Association has done a wonderful of demonizing President Obama," he said.

“...Given the choice of dying on a hilltop for the glory of obuma fascism or heading home to watch COPS and drink a beer, they will go home to watch TV. Every time....”

Let’s hope you’re right, Sarge. I sure hope you are.

Most of the LEOs in my neck of the woods live in the neighborhood, and they are gunnies. They SEEM to be on our side of things.

But when it comes down to the choice of keeping their pensions and livelihood versus upholding an oath and refusing the door-to-door confiscate order with the Federales, we’ll see where their loyalties lie.

Youre missing my point. You all are solely to blame for the current environment in regard to gun control in CA. What have you done to stop it? I think nothing at all. Then you try to work up some kinship w/ gun owners in states who worked hard to push back the tyranny. Nothing will change in CA as long as you justify your lazy cowardice. Sure, go ahead and poke at me but the fact remains youre no better than the liberals you let take over CA. Perhaps you might come out worse in that you knew what was right and did nothing effective.

“...no better than the liberals you let take over CA...”

I don’t know that anybody “let” them take over so much as they actively and aggressively gamed the political system, strategized, targeted areas, ran for office, overwhelmed the area with numbers, and won the seats. Once you get the legislative and judicial levers at your disposal, well, there it goes.

To begin to reverse it, good folks have to run, win, embed and entrench themselves, and HOLD the seats. Local, township, county, state level - all and every.

And the problem as I see it is that the “good people” are busy working, trying to earn a living and support families, busting their asses to keep their heads above water - while the dirtbags have people like Soros, rich Hollywood moonbats, and other moneybags financing them with endlessly deep pockets and a compliant media to further it.

How do you counter that? With a feckless GOP that rolls over and shows it’s backside at the merest hint of confrontation?

The Dems fight like hell to get their people elected. The GOP, not so much.

So maybe the start of it is - replacing the damned RINOs at the local, county and state level and taking back areas that can be taken back.

And yeah...it may be too late there. But not everywhere.

If moving is an option, then conservatives should move to areas where other conservatives are, where the local politics is conservative, and where you can consolidate and make a “Free State” mentality grow. Door to door campaign, if you have to.

Sounds easy, I know...easier said than done.

I know cops. The key word is “pension.”

I understand completely! Its a hard road to walk b/c as you said theres a job to do, family to take care of etc etc. OTOH the liberals are paid to take over and ‘rule’. I would greatly encourage you all to get in the and fight. I agree that CA is a hard case but if the liberals won you can too. There’s nothing magic about what they did. Its about hard work and not giving up. Frankly, I think the job isnt so hard as you think. Consider even libs own guns. They just need to be made to understand that some (probably large) population of them will lose those if the end game plays out. Even in TN my lib neighbours huffed and puffed about not giving up their guns. When faced w/ the sad fact the party they support was going to do just that they had no argument. My hope was if I confronted them often enough the light would finally dawn.

I live in Pennsy, and we are fighting like hell to keep this a Gunny state. We are a thumb in their eye on the East Coast, and fully intend to remain as such.

I also have neighbors that are libs, but are not absolute lunatic fringe moonbats. They’re just ignorant - read clueless - about who and what the party is that they’re supporting. I don’t necessarily think they’re bad people - just brainwashed and conditioned to think a certain way.

I’m doing all I can to change that and will continue to do so.

I am fortunate, however, in that the majority of the folk I live near are former and retired military, so it’s a decent base to start from.

“...The key word is “pension.”...”

Sure, and that’s a powerful motivator.

So for those that choose to follow that path, well...I’ll leave that one hanging and not go further. That’s their choice.

Very similar situation here. The fight is mostly about maintaining but we’ve had some very good forward progress lately. Mostly libs here are of the type where you are in PA. They just don’t think it thru. I’ve made it my business to stimulate their brains in regard to gun ownership. My neighbourhood is a mixed bag but gun fire is common year round. That said its a 24x7 ‘job’ to make sure we don’t lose ground. That all said, its not really about us at all but future generations. We need to make sure they enjoy these same freedoms and more. I’ve travelled the world some and there’s absolutely no place like the US!

I'm not a Californian. Unfortunately, I have to work in San Diego. My "toys" are at home in Idaho. I won't bring any of them inside CA. Getting home and away from San Diego is my preferred solution.

I’m not either, I just pinged you for old-time’s sake.

Gun laws were one of the main reasons I left Mexikalifornistan for North Florida.

Travis - It’s absolutely repugnant that WE have to leave from ANYWHERE in our own Country.

“...We need to make sure they enjoy these same freedoms and more. I’ve travelled the world some and there’s absolutely no place like the US!...”

Which goes back to my original point, my good brother from the great state of Tennessee.... We need everyone who believes in and loves the liberty and ideals of this country, whatever state they’re in. I look at folks who are “behind enemy lines” and I see those people who are being messed with mercilessly.

My attitude is: They f*** with one of us, they’re f***ing with ALL of us.

I work with Jersey folks who are trying to get CCW in New Jersey. They believe it WILL happen, eventually and they are pushing for it at all levels. PA gunnies are helping where they can - and, conversely, we’re keeping NJ style gun BS OUT of PA by working with the Jersey folks.

We just need to stick together and be a wall - and every time the the libtards try to mess with us, they’ll beat themselves senseless against that wall.

Your last sentence said it all, friend...there IS absolutely no place like the US. Up to us to make sure that that remains so.

On a different note...how in the hell did Tennessee give us an amazing Patriot like Davey Crockett, and then turn around and produce Al Gore??? :^) hahah!!!

It is what it is. I have zero hope that we will have 50 states as currently constituted in 20 years. Regions of relative freedom are my best-case scenario. Worst case runs from Max Max to hard tyranny on the level of Hitler or Stalin. Of course, I’ll be dead by then, picked up in the early purges. With luck, surrounded by hot brass and DRT, and not just thrown in a torture cell.

Davy Crockett went to Texas. There is a lesson there. Even if he died at the Alamo, a lot of other great patriots didn’t, and they built a great state.

‘On a different note...how in the hell did Tennessee give us an amazing Patriot like Davey Crockett, and then turn around and produce Al Gore??? :^) hahah!!!’

Yup, every state has their embarrassments and TN has its share for sure. Lets not forget Jim Sasser, Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker and Ned and his ilk in the TN legislature...but the list is huge. We can mostly keep them in check or at least in state. Sometimes one will get away from you though and inflict itself on the rest of the nation. Sorry about that guys, really! As an aside TN being red is a slight myth. People here have a good appetite for public $ just like most anywhere. You have the worthless along side those who want to make their own way. At the moment the later group is in a slight majority but only just.

On the other subject Ive always felt trust and deference were earned. Its really hard to have that toward lazy gun owners in places like CA, NJ, MA, IL to name a few. It was thru inaction and lack of conviction theyre in the place they are now. They were outclassed by liars. Why would I support such a bunch when they wont even do for themselves? Just saying....

In NH you hear the same old song from MA residents who come here to buy guns. They whine and grouse about MA gun laws but never do anything more. They beg the counter guy to sell them a gun they know wont pass muster in MA. The clerk is powerless to do anything about it, he’s complying w/ the law. Why don’t these whiners make a diff in their state instead of beating the clerk up? Basically b/c they’re lazy and self absorbed. I just can’t see spending my limited time on someone like that. In the end I think my efforts will be wasted for no purpose.

Sort of true. There’s a heavy gunny population here, lots of hunters and people “Un-re-educatable” attitudes.

Proud of it, too, as you can probably tell :^).

Philly is just sh*t with a Thug for mayor and a Thug for police chief, and Thugs on city council. Wasn’t always so. I grew up there, and it was a great city once, with some pockets of sh*t.

Now, it’s a sh*t city with pockets of great.

Pittsburgh - never been there, but it’s probably the same.

“...Davy Crockett went to Texas...”

His famous statement “Ya’ll can go to Hell. I’m going to Texas!” Amazing guy. He put it on the line for what he loved and believed in - helping other Americans.

That’s what we need.

“...Yup, every state has their embarrassments ...”

Oh yeah for sure, buddy...After all, PA gave the world Arlen Specter, he of the “Single Bullet Theory” (or Magic Bullet) in the JFK saga...a theory so monumentally stupid that it defies belief, and yet...there it is...

And then there’s John Murtha, an ABSCAM-stung Democrat politician who was just pure scum...

And Fast Eddie Rendell...

Yeah...we’ve got our crosses to bear too.

“...Why don’t these whiners make a diff in their state instead of beating the clerk up? Basically b/c they’re lazy and self absorbed....”

Maybe they seriously just have no clue how to do so. Remember, a lot of folks have been asleep at the wheel for a long time, and are just waking up to what’s going on.

Guys like us, we’ve been fighting this fight since Slick Willy, Waco, Ruby Ridge and before; but it took incidents like those to open our eyes.

I give the benefit of the doubt where I can, because I’ve turned quite a few folks into CCW holders and active gunnies over the last few years - folks who weren’t paying attention and now are.

I’ll do what I can, where I can, whenever I can to increase our numbers, one Citizen at a time.

Every one of us is one less for the other side.
