Unions lost big in Michigan in November when voters rejected Proposal 2, Big Labor's plan to canonize collective bargaining in the state constitution. Now they are facing a backlash with the happy possibility that Michigan could become the 24th right-to-work state.

I have an unclear understanding of “right to work”.
A business can be unionized but people who work there are not required to join? If you’re already a union member of that business, can you quit that union?
If the latter is correct, are there any stats in Indiana, about how many union members quit their union, after the new law went into effect?
How about stats in Wisconsin about how many teachers no longer pay union dues, since the state quit the mandatory withholding of dues?
While Michigan is not a RTW state, I could be hired as an hourly-paid contract employee (W2 or 1099 status) of a technical services staffing company and assigned to Chrysler but I would still have to pay dues to the UAW even though I wouldn’t be eligible for the same benefits as regular members, if any at all. The UAW claims that RTW is meant to weaken the union but what right does the UAW have to collect dues from non-members? The claim that RTW weakens the union is bogus because it’s all about the money and the ever-increasing empowerment of unions. RTW would be precedent-setting in Michigan and that’s why the UAW is dead set against it.
Any state that can produce a cesspool like Detroit will stay with goon unions. Michigan’s hopeless.
I anticipate Governor Walker (Wisconsin) has similar plans and may enter that same idea over here. Keep praying he does. wisconsin too, needs to be a “RTW” state.
The Tea Party Revolution in 2010 gave Snyder the House, Senate, and Court with decent margins.
My guess is they are striking while the Iron is Hot, i.e. the Unions maybe low on funds, tired from the election and maybe off kilter because this has come up now.
My guess as a tactic this would pass with 1 or 2 votes in each house without having to sacrifice to many seats, just like Pelosi did that rad beeotch did with Obamacare, and then Snyder can sign it.
If it is a done deal before 2013, it may set a tone that we (Michigan) are open for business, don't forget Michigan has the highest concetration of Engineers in America, but more importantly send the City of Detroit a message, with all their Union / Budget problems
Michigan's lower tier of countires have about 99.99999% of the economic value of the state. Indiana's upper tier of counties still have some undeveloped areas.
Michigan can save its economy with RTW, or they can see it all move to Indiana! BTW, that will be WITHOUT the vast majority of the people. The reason is Indiana can control housing developments, and who wants to replicate the mess that was Detroit! So, just the factories and offices eh!
I saw some of the union tantrum on the news last night. Some idiot was screaming that “Every union worker in the western hemisphere is coming to Michigan to burn the MFer down”.
They’ve really overplayed their hand and even some of their own members are voting against union proposals. After all, the Union Conservatives have been a major factor in pushing for right to work.
What a novel idea...the right to work.
Does that have something to do with freedom? Gee! I think it does!
For many of my union neighbors, union has simply become another layer of unresponsive government with dues being the tax. The ability to withhold the union tax puts members back in charge. (which is an interesting commentary on taxation in America)
My neighbor says he can’t see that he would lose anything if the union were to disappear tomorrow.
I don't know where you're from, but I guess the rest of America thinks Detroit covers all of Michigan. Did you know that we have a Republican Governor, and control both houses of Mi congress? Did you know that we just defeated the latest attempted union power grab by about 60/40?
While much of Detroit is a cesspool, one of the ten wealthiest counties (earnings per capita) in the country is a half-hour away. Michigan isn't exactly what you think it is.
That is interesting. Like many they will not fight the leviathan or even speak out about it, like you or I might. I doubt said neighbor will call the State House ya or nay in the next two days. That maybe a big part of our problem as a nation, our disinterested electorate, quite frankly ignorant and they would rather watch the Lions loose on their flat screen... Pass the chips please...
RTW would be a stab in the heart for the Dem party in MI. They need those union donations.
Oh I'd like to take said individual for a car ride in Bloomfield Hills, better yet Franklin Michigan.
If you had the money of those in Franklin, you'd burn yours...
Also show them the West Side of Telegraph i.e. Franklin and 2 blocks North of the Detriot Skate Club on the other side of Telegraph where it becomes Pontiac and see what Lefist regimes do to a city aka just like Detroit.
Also show them Grand Rapids, all places up North and in Farm Country.
We are so not Detroit as a State.....
In the current Forbes there is a Chart indicating states where you should invest or not invest in a house or muni bond. Michigan is faint pink, ok, not faint blue and not ok. I would imagine some counties, like Wayne county, might be dark blue however.

Yep, my lady lives in GR (I’m in Waterford, so that’s convenient!)...and GR is damn nice for a larger city. All true about Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Novi, Northville, and on and on. I love riding my motorcycle through any of those areas in the summer. How about Old Orchard Trail (south side of Orchard Lake)? Some of those people (mansions) have TWO lakefronts I think. Sweeeeeet.
